During a recent episode of The Downbeat podcast, Matt Honeycutt shared insights alongside his bandmate, Eric English, about his journey through various odd jobs while waiting for Kublai Khan TX to gain traction. Despite the band’s growing popularity, which included supporting the legendary Killswitch Engage on their U.S. tour earlier this year, Honeycutt continues to showcase his artistic talents as a tattoo artist at Electric Age Tattoo Company located in Sherman, Texas.

However, it’s important to note that not all of his previous employment experiences were rooted in creativity.

On the podcast, Honeycutt recounted his brief stint at Hot Topic, stating that his time there lasted no more than one month.

“I felt totally out of my depth, man,” he expressed, reflecting on the vibrant atmosphere filled with anime posters and pop culture merchandise.

He attributed his hiring at Hot Topic largely to his status as a member of Kublai Khan TX.

“I told everyone, ‘You guys are all awesome, and this place is cool, but I’m just not cut out for this. You keep insisting that I engage with customers and smile at them,'” he admitted.

What Motivated Matthew Honeycutt to Accept a Position at Hot Topic?

Given the visibility and nature of the retail environment, Honeycutt likely understood the dynamics he was stepping into when he took the job at Hot Topic. However, one significant factor helped him overlook the potential discomfort of customer interactions.

“The air conditioning was fantastic,” he joked, highlighting the allure of a cool workspace in contrast to his usual outdoor labor.

Prior to his brief employment at Hot Topic, Honeycutt was engaged in the physically demanding job of building fences under the Texas sun. This experience led him to develop a newfound appreciation for manual labor after his unexpected departure from Hot Topic.

“When I was building fences, I felt like I was in heaven. The work was enjoyable, and I loved being outdoors,” Honeycutt recalled. “That’s when I realized I had been misled; I thought I deserved a job that kept me indoors.”

Looking ahead, Kublai Khan TX is scheduled to perform at two major festival events: Rock Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin, on July 17, and the Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival in Mansfield, Ohio, on July 19. Following these appearances, the band will embark on a European tour featuring various festivals starting on August 6.
