Lanterns carries significant expectations as one of the initial DCU projects not helmed by James Gunn, and Superman’s Guy Gardner, along with Lanterns’ first teaser trailer, has not helped set audience expectations positively. The transition from the vibrant, whimsical tone of Superman to the seemingly dull atmosphere of Lanterns is already a stark tonal shift, but that’s not the primary challenge this HBO series faces.
The importance of lore and continuity cannot be overstated in any cinematic universe, especially one that loosely adapts nearly a century of comic book material. Assuming the trailer’s dialogue was selectively chosen, the DCU’s portrayal of the Green Lantern Corps—specifically Hal Jordan and John Stewart—may be unrecognizable to long-time fans of the comics.
A ‘True Detective’ Green Lantern Story Has Potential
It would be surprising if Lanterns ends up as bleak and grim as HBO’s True Detective, yet it is not unexpected that Lanterns has developed in this manner given that True Detective seems to be its guiding influence. Interestingly, for a long time, we only had a single image featuring Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.
The concept is intriguing: a rookie-mentor duo of cosmic defenders focusing their intergalactic duties on a rural town in Midwestern America. The crimes they investigate are certainly eccentric enough to warrant Green Lantern intervention, but how this fits into the broader DCU continuity raises concerns.
The trailer depicts these characters predominantly in the same attire as seen in the promotional image, suggesting that much of what is shown occurs early in Lanterns, likely within the first episode. Therefore, it may be premature to form any definitive opinions on the series’ overall tone or style, and this trailer might intentionally mislead viewers.
Lanterns’ First Trailer Indicates Key Information
To maintain its identity as a serious ‘dark’ thriller, Lanterns may inadvertently mock other members of the diverse Green Lantern Corps. Traditionally, these characters train together and share mentor-mentee relationships, making Hal’s casual reference to them as “aliens” particularly jarring, especially when he derogatorily calls Ch’p, a H’lvenite he was recruited alongside in the comics, a “f***ng squirrel.”
Even if metahumans have existed for centuries within the DCU, Hal’s dialogue suggests that this version of him lacks familiarity or respect for his Corps companions, including Kilowog the Bolovaxian. Additionally, it appears that the show is altering John’s Green Lantern origin by oddly depicting him earning a ring he supposedly hasn’t worn yet. Thus, it can be anticipated that many liberties will be taken concerning what is generally accepted as standard Green Lantern canon and the dynamics among its Corps characters.
It is not uncommon for comic book adaptations to only superficially engage with the source material they claim to draw inspiration from. The DCU’s mythology does not have to replicate entire narratives or character traits from the comics. For instance, one notable lore change involves Jor-El and Lara-El sending their son Kal-El to rule over Earth oppressively.
DCU Lore is Currently Underdeveloped
If the teaser trailer was deliberately edited to create context-free intrigue for audiences, both DCU and HBO must realize that reactions will likely be mixed at best. While it’s possible that special effects and visuals will enhance actual episodes, it would be quite audacious to conceal those elements and fabricate divisive character dialogue for shock value when the show premieres in August.
Nonetheless, lore within the DCU remains significantly underdeveloped. Each project—Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman—has thus far explored only a small portion of the broader universe’s lore.
Regarding the Green Lantern Corps, we learned almost nothing from Superman‘s Guy Gardner, who was already established as part of the Justice Gang. There’s no telling what new storytelling choices will emerge in Lanterns, set to release later this summer, but it is hoped that it will clarify what constitutes canon for the DCU’s Green Lantern characters.
