The Banshees of Inisherin actor has sparked public interest regarding the pronunciation of his Irish last name, and he was excited when BBC Radio 1 host Greg James correctly pronounced it as “Kee-oh-gan.”
“Every time I mention it on the radio,” Greg stated during Barry’s March 11 appearance on The Breakfast Show, “people are like, ‘It’s not Kee-OH-gan.’ I’m like, ‘It is!’”
Barry inquired who might be mispronouncing his name, with Greg humorously suggesting it was “everyone.”
However, Barry remarked, “Until a Keoghan tells you it’s not how you say it, well then you know.”
Greg expressed his frustration when people advised him not to “pronounce the -eogan,” exclaiming, “Yeah you do pronounce the ‘eogan!”
As for how the radio DJ recalled Barry’s last name? Greg joked that after watching the end of 2023’s Saltburn—where Barry appeared fully frontal—Greg was “talking about Barry’s Ke-oh-gan for a long time.”
