Lessons from Ozzy Osbourne’s Six Children Through the Years

Beyond being a monumental figure in the realm of heavy metal music, Ozzy Osbourne also embraced fatherhood with six children. His legacy extends beyond music to family, creating a life filled with unique experiences and challenges.

Most fans are well-acquainted with his two youngest children, Kelly and Jack, who gained fame through their prominent roles on the hit reality show The Osbournes, along with their diverse ventures in television as adults. Their personalities have captivated audiences and contributed to their lasting fame.

The four other children have opted for a more private lifestyle, yet their father has shared heartfelt, humorous, and at times regretful anecdotes about all six of his children in his 2009 memoir, I Am Ozzy. This narrative provides insight into the myriad lessons he learned and unforgettable moments he experienced while raising them.

Discovering the Life of Jessica Osbourne

Born: Jan. 20, 1972. This date falls just five months after the release of Black Sabbath's iconic third album, Master of Reality, and eight months ahead of Vol. 4, which debuted in September 1972.

In his autobiography, I Am Ozzy, Osbourne recounts the intense story of his first daughter’s birth. He vividly describes the chaotic experience of driving his first wife, Thelma Riley, to the hospital while under the influence of alcohol, without a driver’s license, and with no knowledge of how to operate a vehicle. “It’s a miracle I didn’t crash into the back of an ambulance, to be honest with you,” he reminisced. “But somehow I managed to get the wheels to stop moving and then get Thelma out of her seat and into the maternity ward.”

Osbourne chose the middle name Starshine for Jessica because he was inspired by the clear, cold winter night sky, which was filled with “gleaming constellations in every direction” visible from their hospital room window. Despite living a largely private life, Jessica made a notable phone appearance in the second season of The Osbournes to share the news of her father’s first grandchild.

Understanding Elliot Kingsley’s Journey

Born: 1966. This timing is roughly four years prior to the release of Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album in February 1970.

When Osbourne met Thelma Riley in 1971, she already had a five-year-old son, Elliot Kingsley, from a previous relationship. Following their marriage, Osbourne adopted Elliot, though he candidly admits that he struggled with fatherhood during those early years. “He was a good kid, but for some reason we never got on,” Osbourne reflects in his memoir. “I spent the whole time when I was home screaming at him or whacking him around the ear ‘ole. I wish it could have been better with him, because it’s not like he ever did anything bad to deserve it. …To tell the truth, I must have been a horrendous stepdad.”

Much like his step-sister Jessica, Kingsley has maintained a low profile, pursuing a career as a theater actor and opting not to appear or be discussed on The Osbournes television series.

Exploring the Life of Louis Osbourne

Born: 1975. This year coincided with the release of Black Sabbath’s sixth studio album, Sabotage.

In 1975, Osbourne and Thelma welcomed their third child, a son named Louis, amidst significant relationship turmoil. Osbourne openly expresses regret, stating, “Thelma really suffered with me, and I really regret that.” In his memoir, he reflects, “If there’s one thing I wish for in my life, it’s that I could take it all back.”

Fortunately, Osbourne noted in 2009 that his relationships with both Louis and Jessica improved significantly after he achieved sobriety. “I see Jess and Louis all the time now, too. They both got Thelma’s brains: Jess is a surveyor and Louis got a law degree. Between them, they’ve given me four grandchildren, which is a crazy thought.” Louis attended his father’s farewell concert, where he expressed emotional sentiments on social media, saying, “I was sobbing at times. It was everything we wanted it to be and more.” He also supported his siblings during Osbourne’s funeral procession.

Connecting with Aimee Osbourne’s Story

Born: Sept. 2, 1983. This date is situated about a year and a half after her father faced significant legal troubles at the Alamo, and two months before the release of his first solo album post-Randy Rhoads, Bark at the Moon.

Following the divorce from Thelma in 1982, Ozzy Osbourne married Sharon Levy, who was previously the manager of Black Sabbath’s Don Arden. Ultimately, Sharon became Ozzy’s personal manager, facilitating his rise as one of the most prominent solo artists in rock history. Their first daughter arrived about a year later, after Sharon insisted that Ozzy quit using cocaine and dispose of his extensive collection of firearms.

“[Aimee] was a guiding light for us, she really was,” Osbourne stated in his book. “It had been just over a year since Randy and Rachel [Youngblood] had died, and we were only just starting to get over it. With Aimee, we had a brand new reason to feel good about life.” Unlike her younger siblings, Aimee chose to distance herself from the reality television spotlight, moving out of the family home at 16 instead of participating in The Osbournes. “She hated the idea,” Sharon shared with People. “It was appalling to her.”

Aimee has remained steadfast in her commitment to carve out her own identity in the music industry, performing under the name ARO.

Embracing the Vibrant Personality of Kelly Osbourne

Born: Oct. 27, 1984. This timing is nearly a year after the release of Bark at the Moon and about 15 months before The Ultimate Sin was released in 1986.

Ozzy Osbourne knew instantly that his youngest daughter would possess a fiery spirit the moment she entered the world. “Kelly came out into the world, screaming — and she hasn’t stopped since, bless her. She’s a real chip off the old block,” he remarked in I Am Ozzy. “I think that’s why I’ve always felt so protective of her.” Kelly’s bold personality made her a standout star on The Osbournes, a platform she briefly leveraged into a music career before transitioning to television hosting. She welcomed her first child, Sidney, in 2022 with her then-boyfriend Sid Wilson from Slipknot.

The spotlight shone on her father when Wilson proposed to Kelly backstage at the Back to the Beginning concert, humorously exclaiming, “Fuck off, you’re not marrying my daughter!”

Jack Osbourne’s Journey: A Story of Resilience

Born: Nov. 8, 1985. This date falls two months before the release of The Ultimate Sin.

The arrival of Ozzy’s sixth child and third within three years introduced unforeseen challenges into his touring life. “For a few years, I spent most of my time in a panic trying to find Jack’s comfort blanket, which was this little yellow teddy bear called Baby,” Osbourne recalls in his memoir. “Jack would go fucking insane if he didn’t have Baby to cuddle and chew on. But we were traveling so much that Baby often got left behind. I became obsessed with that fucking bear. I’d come offstage and the first thing I’d say was, ‘Where’s Baby? Has anyone seen Baby? Make sure we don’t lose Baby!'”

Ozzy has credited Jack with being a pivotal influence in his journey to sobriety after years of battling addiction. “I had a row with Jack,” he recounted to Variety in 2021. “I had to talk business. And I said, ‘What have you ever fucking wanted? I’ll give you whatever you want.’ He replies, ‘What about a father?’ That kicked me in the balls so hard. It knocked me sideways.”

Like his sister Kelly, Jack has successfully transitioned from Osbournes fame into a thriving television hosting career, with his latest endeavor being The Osbournes Want to Believe, where he explores his parents’ perspectives on famous accounts of paranormal activity.

In 2012, Jack revealed his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, but he has effectively managed the condition through a balanced approach involving medication, diet, exercise, and stress management, successfully avoiding severe symptoms thus far. He is also a proud father of four children, with the most recent addition born to his second wife, Aree Gearheart, in 2022.
