Lizzo Opens Up About Her Struggles with “Dark Depression” During Remarkable Return to Live Concerts After Two-Year Hiatus
For Lizzo, facing backlash is anything but a joyous experience. The talented artist and Grammy Award winner recently shared her insights into how she navigates the challenging waters of public criticism while maintaining her resilience and grace.
During an insightful conversation on the May 14 episode of Therapuss hosted by Jake Shane, Lizzo revealed, “I’ve been cancelled a lot.” She clarified, “I shouldn’t say I’ve been cancelled, because I’m still going strong, but I’ve certainly faced significant backlash throughout my career.”
She further explained, “Every single time I’ve encountered backlash, I view it as an opportunity for growth and a valuable learning lesson.” This perspective highlights her commitment to personal and professional development, even amidst adversity.
For the empowering “Juice” singer, her initial run-in with public criticism was triggered by her song “Good as Hell” being associated with Weight Watchers following the acquisition by Oprah Winfrey.
“It was a surreal moment when I found out, ‘Oprah wants to use your song,’” Lizzo reminisced. “I was ecstatic. I couldn’t believe that Oprah knew who I was! I was like, ‘Yes! Yes!’”
However, her excitement quickly turned to dismay. “I remember posting the commercial, filled with pride, only to be met with comments like, ‘You’re f–king joking, right? This is promoting eating disorders,’” she confided to Jake. “And in that moment, I felt my heart shatter. It genuinely broke my heart.”
