Lobo’s Extreme Comic Redesign Outshines Jason Momoa’s DCU Look

DC intensifies its Lobo game just in time for the main character’s DCU debut, and Jason Momoa’s live-action portrayal already feels small in comparison. Lobo is one of the most extravagant characters in the DC multiverse, embodying all the excesses of the 1990s.

If there’s an actor who can perfectly play a gruff, action-loving DC anti-hero, it’s Jason Momoa. Even before he first portrayed Aquaman in the DCEU, Momoa had already set his sights on Lobo. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long to see Momoa’s take on the Czarnian bounty hunter, who will serve as an antagonist in Craig Gillespie’s upcoming Supergirl movie.

DC Comics’ ALL IN era launches its new stage, NEXT LEVEL, in 2026. Multiple characters are set to get their own solo runs, which take place in DC’s primary continuity. One of these titles is Lobo #1, following up on his participation in DC K.O. The new character design for Lobo #1 emphasizes the infamous anti-hero’s robust frame, featuring cartoonish, spiky hair and oversized leather clothes.

Thirteen years after Lobo’s infamously skinny redesign from the New 52, DC highlights Lobo’s ultra-edgy origins. Lobo’s new solo run aligns with his DCU debut. However, comic-book Lobo’s larger-than-life appearance overshadows the DCU’s live-action design.

Fortunately, Jason Momoa’s Lobo looks extremely faithful to the source material. Momoa himself is already perfect casting for the Czarnian, and the DCU’s unapologetic approach to the comics’ fantastic elements ensures that the anti-hero will be as comic-accurate as possible. Still, if DC ever wanted to introduce a one-to-one adaptation of Lobo, he would likely need to be an almost fully-CGI character like Deadpool‘s Colossus or The Avengers‘ Hulk.

Jason Momoa’s Lobo will be a secondary antagonist in Supergirl, where he’ll likely clash with Kara Zor-El. However, Supergirl may only be the beginning of his DCU journey. Momoa’s Lobo has the potential to evolve across every DCU appearance, becoming more extravagant and embodying that 1990s edge.

If Momoa’s Lobo gains a fan following, he could earn his own DCU movie or TV show. Just like Marvel’s Deadpool, Momoa’s Lobo could break the rules of his universe to take his appearances to the extreme. R-rated violence, fourth-wall breaks, mature humor, and wild crossovers could become synonymous with the Biggest Bastich of the Universe.
