Locke And Key on Netflix Ends Streaming’s Most Annoying Trend

Locke and Key may be underrated, but it’s a fantasy horror series that’s worth your time — especially because it broke a frustrating streaming trend for both genres. Based on the comic series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez, Locke and Key ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2020 to 2022.

Given all that was happening at the time, it’s not surprising that the show was somewhat overlooked. However, its concept was masterfully brought to life by its cast. Locke and Key followed the eponymous Locke family as they moved into their father’s ancestral home and discovered the magic within it.

Alongside magical keys came more sinister forces to contend with, and the Locke siblings spent three seasons going up against Dodge and their efforts to open a door to the demon realm. Although Locke and Key‘s ending wasn’t what every viewer was hoping for, it broke a troublesome streaming trend.

Locke & Key Was Underrated, But It’s A Streaming Show That Got A Proper Ending

Locke and Key may not be the greatest fantasy show or the scariest horror series to debut in recent years. However, it makes for a fun binge-watch, as its approach to its fantasy elements feels unique, putting a fresh spin on haunted house narratives. It’s also a rare streaming series to receive a proper ending.

Far too many genre shows are concluded before they can truly get off the ground. This is true of fantasy shows canceled too soon, but it also applies to horror series, like 1899 and The Midnight Club. Given that Locke and Key blends elements of both categories, it’s impressive that it received a complete run.

That alone is an incentive to dive into it, as streaming shows in general don’t always have certain futures. Those looking to play it safe and pick up a finished series should add Locke and Key to their watchlists.

How Locke & Key Broke A Frustrating Streaming Trend For Its Genres

Locke and Key may not have received the attention it deserved, but the Netflix show clearly has something going for it; otherwise, it wouldn’t have broken streaming’s most frustrating trend for both its genres. The fact that the series had an established following likely helped it get renewed, though Shadow and Bone‘s cancellation proves that’s not a given.

Showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill also told Deadline that they went into its story with a plan, with even Netflix envisioning the series as a three-season project. The fact that everyone was on the same page likely helped make this vision a reality — though Locke and Key‘s impressive cast and compelling narrative likely also factored into its renewals.
