From playing Stringer Bell in the beloved crime series The Wire to making a notable cameo appearance in The Office, Idris Elba has racked up many memorable performances across his acclaimed and varied career. However, for Elba’s British fanbase, perhaps none of his performances are more iconic than that of the titular unconventional homicide detective in the BBC series Luther.
It has now been six years since Luther last graced the small screen, and, although a feature-length project pleased some fans back in 2023, there has been plenty of clamor for a return to the genius yet damaged mind of Elba’s gritty detective. In a recent interview with creator Neil Cross, there seems to be some possibility that this might happen, although not in a way that fans might expect. Asked whether Luther would come back on the small or big screen, Cross replied, “Certainly, were he to come back, were that happy event to take place, I think film would be the natural place for him.”
However, it seems to Cross that the most likely next step in this franchise is for a spin-off to rise from Luther’s ashes, with the creator adding, “But the world of Luther… I think, things are such now that it’s not just a character, it’s a world. If you’ve gone on long enough, there is a world to inhabit, and elements of that world can belong on the big or the small screen. So I wouldn’t be at all averse to something in the same universe, as it were, happening on telly.”
So, will Luther return? “There are extraordinarily strong possibilities you might see him again,” Cross added. “Is that the heaviest hint that’s possible to give without Netflix sending a trained assassin around to silence me? Yeah, there’s every chance you will meet him again.” This seems like the biggest hint yet that Luther is destined to return to Netflix following The Fallen Sun. Elba’s detective, should he return following a successful run on the BBC and his supposed end, would follow in the footsteps of another BBC-turned-Netflix favorite: Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy). Following Peaky Blinders‘ final outing on the Beeb, although it has now been confirmed that the series will return in a spin-off capacity sometime soon, Tommy Shelby and the rest of the flat cap-wearing gang are set to return in a feature film titled The Immortal Man.
Luther looks destined to return. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest stories.
