Robert Trujillo, the renowned bassist, was present at Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral in late July, where he reminisced about some truly magical moments that unfolded during the service. This significant event was not only a public procession that wound through the streets of Birmingham, but it was also livestreamed for fans around the globe to witness. However, the actual service was an intimate gathering, reserved for family and close friends, held at Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s residence in Buckinghamshire, England. Only 110 attendees were present, including Trujillo and his fellow Metallica bandmate James Hetfield.
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk, Trujillo shared some extraordinary occurrences that took place during the ceremony as various individuals paid tribute to the legendary Prince of Darkness. He described how the weather fluctuated throughout the service, noting, “It had been raining at the beginning of the service… As it progressed through the service, the weather would change and different things would happen.” He recalled a moment when Kelly (Kelly Osbourne) was singing, and her lyrics seemed to be caught by the wind, almost as if Ozzy was playfully interacting with her.
Trujillo continued, “And then when Geezer (Geezer Butler) spoke, the sun came out. I’m not kidding — the sun actually came out. It was beautiful from that moment on, a very magical moment.” He emphasized that Butler became emotional during his speech but ultimately delivered “an amazing eulogy.” The service was filled with heartfelt anecdotes and humor, with many different stories shared among the attendees, which helped to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Trujillo concluded by reflecting on the heartfelt words shared by many individuals, stating, “Heartfelt words from so many people and reconnecting with different musicians and bandmates, crew members, all that.” This gathering was not just a goodbye but also an opportunity for everyone to celebrate Ozzy’s life and legacy while reconnecting with each other.
What Was Trujillo’s Connection to Ozzy Osbourne?
Robert Trujillo played an integral role in Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band from the late ’90s until 2003, when he transitioned to Metallica to fill the position left by Jason Newsted. Interestingly, Newsted had also stepped in as a temporary replacement for Trujillo in Ozzy’s band during that time. In recent years, Trujillo and Ozzy have rekindled their connection, with Trujillo contributing to Ozzy’s final album, Patient Number 9 (2022). Additionally, he performed alongside Ozzy during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony when Ozzy was honored as a solo artist in late 2024.

That night, Trujillo had the chance to see Ozzy one last time backstage. He expressed to Ozzy, “Incredible. I am so proud of you. You were amazing and this means so much to all of us.” Ozzy then inquired if he could see James Hetfield, leading to a poignant moment where Hetfield got down on one knee to hold Ozzy’s hand, creating a powerful and emotional exchange as they seemed to be saying a heartfelt goodbye.
Who Else Was Present at Ozzy’s Funeral Service?
Alongside Ozzy’s family, Robert Trujillo, James Hetfield, and Geezer Butler, a number of other notable musicians attended the funeral service. The rest of the Black Sabbath members, including Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, were present, in addition to musicians like Zakk Wylde, Rob Zombie, Corey Taylor, Marilyn Manson, Elton John, Yungblud, and Slipknot’s Sid Wilson, who is engaged to Kelly Osbourne.
