Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio Fans Disappointed This October

One of the greatest filmmakers in cinema history, Martin Scorsese is the man behind some of the best films to ever hit the big screen. From Goodfellas to 1973’s Mean Streets, Scorsese’s touch is Midas-like when it comes to awards gold. One of his most successful projects at the Academy was The Departed, the 2006 gangster drama that featured a stacked cast headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, and also included the likes of Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin.

A winner of four Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture prize and, unfathomably, Scorsese’s only Best Director win to date, The Departed was an enormous success and is still as beloved today as it was almost two decades ago. It is with that in mind that the film’s fans need to brace for the terrible news that the film is scheduled to leave Netflix this October. It is one of several critically acclaimed titles to be leaving the platform, from George Lucas’ coming-of-age classic, American Graffiti, and Robert De Niro‘s The Deer Hunter, to one of the finest action movies of the century so far, Mission: Impossible – Fallout. For those yet to see The Departed, here’s a look at the synopsis:

“South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster’s trust, a career criminal named Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police department and reports on its activities to his syndicate bosses. When both organizations learn they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin must figure out each other’s identities to save their own lives.”

‘The Departed’ Wasn’t Just a Critical Success

Often, winners of the Best Picture prize are fondly recognized by the Academy but not by theatergoers. For The Departed, this was far from the case, as the film shot to box office success upon its October 2006 release. Made for a reported $90 million, the film more than tripled this investment with a global total of $289 million. Split between a domestic haul of $132 million and a further $157 million from overseas markets, the film finished 2006 as the year’s 14th highest-grossing movie, and is still director Scorsese’s third highest-grossing movie in his career.

The Departed is scheduled to leave Netflix this October. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
