Quentin Tarantino opened up a bit of a shitstorm last year when he took aim at several Hollywood actors, including Paul Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard. While speaking with People, Lillard opened up about the comments, which he said felt like a punch to the mouth, especially as he thinks Tarantino is a lovely filmmaker.

Tarantino was focused on Dano, whom he called “the weakest f***ing actor in SAG” among other things, but he made sure to mention that he didn’t care for Wilson or Lillard either.
Lillard didn’t hide his disappointment, saying it “sucked” to hear the remarks—particularly because he’d “love” to work with Tarantino someday. “I think he’s a lovely filmmaker, and to just sort of get punched in the mouth just was kind of a bummer,” he said.
However, the amount of love he’s received from fans and fellow actors has been wonderful. “It felt like I had died and was in heaven watching everyone send out their RIP tweets,” he said. “I mean, it was really being a part of your own wake, sort of sitting there living through all the nice things people say after you die.“
Lillard continued, “So it was really, really lovely. It was something that happened that was who cares, really? But I spoke out. I mean, I got caught on a hot mic talking about it, and then it sort of went viral from there… Everyone, from the people at the mall this weekend with my kids to George Clooney and James Gunn and Mike Flanagan, I mean, people have sort of been really generous with telling me how much they loved me and liked my work.“
Lillard is Returning for Scream 7
Lillard’s next project will see him return to the Scream franchise for Scream 7.
