In a shocking turn of events, three prominent members of Jane’s Addiction, namely Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins, have initiated a legal battle against their lead vocalist Perry Farrell following a violent incident that occurred during a live performance on September 13, 2024. This incident unfolded in full view of the audience, where tensions escalated between Navarro and Farrell, culminating in Farrell physically confronting Navarro with both a push and a punch. As a result of this altercation, the concert was abruptly concluded, leading the band to issue a public apology shortly thereafter via their social media channels.
In their statement, the band expressed sincere regret, saying, “We want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night.” They further announced the cancellation of their upcoming concert scheduled for Bridgeport, which was part of their larger 2024 tour that has now been entirely scrapped.
Consequently, a legal suit has been lodged against Farrell, accusing him of multiple offenses, including assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. The lawsuit claims that the tour cancellation has resulted in losses exceeding $10 million and demands that Farrell cover all outstanding expenses associated with the cancellation of the tour.
“The Band can no longer function as a result of the Defendant’s conduct, including his sudden, violent outbursts and demonstrated inability to serve as the Band’s frontman and vocalist,” states a portion of the lawsuit, as reported by Rolling Stone. “The physical, emotional, and financial harms Defendant has wrought have deeply impacted the Plaintiffs, their families, and their loved ones, and it is time for Defendant to face the consequences of his actions and be held accountable.”

The legal documents further highlight that Navarro, upon agreeing to tour with Jane’s Addiction, forfeited a disability insurance policy worth $25,000 per month, which he had been receiving due to a serious case of long COVID-19 that had previously sidelined him from touring. The lawsuit also notes that there had been a prior agreement among the band members to make tour-related decisions through a simple majority rule, a process that Farrell allegedly undermined.
“Perry had an egregious habit of overruling decisions of the Band, and selfishly making everything about himself and [his wife] Etty,” the suit claims.
Additionally, the lawsuit asserts that Farrell’s drinking habits negatively impacted his performance during the tour: “He would often drink wine onstage and slur his speech. Perry frequently went on long, rambling discursions between songs for no apparent purpose other than for his own amusement. The problems with Perry’s performance would often worsen as the night wore on and he became more intoxicated.”
While much of the conflict between Navarro and Farrell was captured on camera, the lawsuit asserts that the altercation persisted backstage: “Nobody could calm Perry down backstage. When Navarro confronted Perry about his violent outburst, Perry threw another unexpected punch at him, striking him on the left side of the face. Navarro was hurt.”
The lawsuit also addresses the financial implications of the tour cancellation, noting that not only did the members of Jane’s Addiction forfeit income from the canceled shows, but they also had plans to complete eight instrumental tracks post-tour—tracks for which they “will potentially be on the hook personally for” with Warner Music Group.
Dave Navarro Declares ‘No Chance’ for Future Collaboration with Perry Farrell
In a statement made back in May, Navarro was unequivocal in expressing that despite the involvement of his bandmates, Jane’s Addiction would not be able to move forward with Farrell as their frontman.
“I have to speak in broad strokes here, because there are other individuals involved, and it’s still very tender and unresolved,” he remarked to Guitar Player. “There was an altercation onstage, and all the hard work and dedication and writing and hours in the studio, and picking up and leaving home and crisscrossing the country and Europe and trying to overcome my illness — it all came to a screeching halt and forever destroyed the band’s life. And there’s no chance for the band to ever play together again.”
