Almost two months have passed since the tragic loss of actress Michelle Trachtenberg, and the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner has now disclosed the details surrounding the cause of her untimely passing.
According to People, a representative from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on Wednesday (April 16) that the cause of death for the beloved actress was classified as natural, stemming from complications associated with diabetes mellitus. This revelation sheds light on the health struggles that may have contributed to her premature death.
“The amended determination regarding her cause of death was made after a thorough review of the toxicology testing results,” the spokesperson remarked. They emphasized that toxicology testing can indeed be conducted without the need for an autopsy, allowing for a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding her passing.
Michelle Trachtenberg tragically passed away on February 26 at the young age of 39. Responding to an emergency call, New York City emergency services discovered the actress “unconscious and unresponsive.” This heartbreaking event has left her fans and loved ones in shock and mourning.
While her death was not deemed suspicious, Trachtenberg’s family opted against an autopsy for personal reasons related to their Jewish faith. Initially, her death was expected to be officially ruled as “undetermined.” However, the new findings from the toxicology review have ultimately brought a sense of closure for those who cherished and loved the actress.
Originally from New York, Michelle Trachtenberg began her acting career as a child, landing her breakthrough role in the film Harriet the Spy, which was released in 1996 when she was just 10 years old. By that time, she had already made several appearances on ABC’s All My Children, where she worked alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. This connection later led to Trachtenberg joining Gellar on the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she starred from 2000 until the show concluded in 2003.
In 2001, during the sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of the show’s most innovative and beloved episodes aired: the musical Once More, with Feeling. While many of the show’s cast showcased their vocal talents, Trachtenberg, a trained ballet dancer, expressed her desire for her dancing skills to take center stage during her appearance. Nonetheless, she did sing the opening title line a cappella in the episode’s coda, “Where Do We Go From Here?,” demonstrating her versatility as a performer.
The soundtrack for the episode, titled Once More, with Feeling, was eventually released by Mutant Enemy/Twentieth Century Fox/Rounder Records and included 23 songs. Reflecting the show’s signature witty dialogue, one lyric humorously features the character played by Alyson Hannigan, who admits, “I think this line’s mostly filler.” The soundtrack performed remarkably well, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart a year after the episode aired, and it also made an impact on the Billboard 200 and Independent Albums charts.
As of now, the Once More, with Feeling album boasts over 23 million streams in the United States, showcasing its lasting popularity and the continued relevance of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in popular culture, according to data from Luminate.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s involvement in the music industry extended beyond her work on Buffy. She also made appearances in music videos for various artists, including Trapt, Ringside, and Fall Out Boy. Notably, she featured in the music video for “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” which achieved impressive chart success, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
