Approximately five minutes later, the attacker was surrounded by concerned shoppers in the parking lot, including one individual who brandished a gun. The group of five to six people yelled at the assailant, urging him to “Drop the knife.” In what seemed like a chilling response, the male suspect reportedly shouted back: “I don’t care, I don’t care.” He continued to back away from the crowd until someone bravely tackled and subdued him.

“At first, it was disbelief. I thought maybe it was like a terror attack,” stated Carter, who delivers customer orders from Walmart. “And then it was fear, disbelief, shock. And it was just amazing. It all happened so fast. He was completely subdued by the time police arrived.”

Tiffany DeFell, another eyewitness, was also present in the store’s parking lot when the chaos unfolded around her. The 36-year-old was shopping in Traverse City and resides approximately 25 miles away in Honor, Michigan.

“It was really scary. My sister and I were just freaking out,” DeFell recounted. “This is something you see in movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you live.”
