Lionsgate has officially revealed the eagerly awaited release date for the highly anticipated sequel, Greenland 2: Migration. This thrilling post-apocalyptic survival film starring the talented Gerard Butler is set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026, promising an exciting continuation of the story that captivated audiences worldwide.
The gripping logline for the film states: “In the aftermath of a catastrophic comet strike that decimated most of the Earth, Greenland 2: Migration follows the brave Garrity family as they are compelled to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to navigate a perilous world in search of a new home.” Alongside Butler, the sequel features a stellar cast including Morena Baccarin, Roman Griffin Davis, Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie. The talented Ric Roman Waugh returns as director, working from a script co-written by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling.
Despite its release during the height of the global pandemic, the original film achieved remarkable success, earning an impressive $52.3 million against a modest budget of just $35 million. Its strong performance continued on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms and it became a popular title on Max. Greenland told a gripping story of a family’s desperate fight for survival as a planet-destroying comet hurtled toward Earth. As indicated by the sequel’s synopsis, the fate of the Earth was far from favorable.
Producer Sébastien Raybaud expressed his enthusiasm for the sequel when production commenced last year, stating, “We are thrilled to have Gerard, Morena, and Ric back on board for Greenland: Migration to show the audiences what happened next to the Garrity family. To be back working with the teams at G-BASE, Thunder Road, CineMachine, and STX, we know the next installment will be just as captivating as the first.” Sam Brown, president of STX, added, “The success of Greenland showcased in a narratively and visually compelling way what one man will do to protect and provide for his family against the most cataclysmic of odds. We could not be more excited to continue Garrity’s harrowing story with Gerry, Morena, Ric, and all of our wonderful producers and partners around the world.”
Our own Chris Bumbray was a fan of the first Greenland movie, praising it as Gerard Butler’s “best all-around film since Olympus Has Fallen.” You can check out his full review right here.
