Migration Signals the Franchise’s Shift to Sci-Fi

Key Highlights

 • Film Release: Gerard Butler’s new film, Greenland: Migration, is set to premiere on January 9.
 • Genre Shift: The sequel appears to transition from action/disaster to sci-fi themes.
 • Director’s Return: Ric Roman Waugh returns to direct the sequel, continuing his collaboration with Butler.
 • Box Office Expectations: The sequel has a larger budget and will need strong box office performance to succeed.

Gerard Butler’s new disaster movie will debut in theaters everywhere in just a few weeks, but new images for the film show that Greenland: Migration might be switching genres. Discussing Film has debuted four new images from Butler’s action/disaster sequel, which show the franchise is hard-pivoting to sci-fi. The new looks at the film show a world decimated, and after John Garrity (Butler) and his family narrowly escaped the carnage in 2020’s Greenland, they have to go back out into the thick of it in Greenland: Migration. The film hits theaters everywhere on January 9, and it also stars Sheriff Country lead Morena Baccarin.

Ric Roman Waugh, who directed the original Greenland film, is back to direct the sequel from Mitchell LaFortune’s script. Waugh is also attached to direct Shelter, the Jason Statham action thriller that will debut at the end of January. It isn’t every day that a director has two movies come out in the same month. Waugh also previously worked with Butler in 2019 on Angel Has Fallen, and he’s famous for his work on Shot Caller, the 2017 thriller starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones).

It was a big year for Gerard Butler, who first returned to one of his beloved roles, Big Nick O’Brien in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. A third installment in the franchise was announced not long after the second hit theaters, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. confirmed earlier this year that Den of Thieves 3 will begin filming next year. Butler also reprised his role as Stoick in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie this summer, and he’ll play the character again in the live-action 2027 sequel.

Will There Be a Third ‘Greenland’ Movie?

There has been no announcement regarding a third Greenland movie, and Lionsgate likely won’t begin having these conversations until it can analyze how the sequel performs. That is, assuming the main characters survive the film. The first Greenland earned a Certified Fresh 77% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 63% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed $52 million at the global box office against a $35 million budget. Greenland 2 reportedly has a larger budget than its predecessor, so it will need more at the box office to break even. Greenland is currently streaming on HBO Max.
