In celebration of this momentous occasion, Portnoy took to his social media platforms to share a deeply personal statement, reflecting on the incredible journey that led to this album’s creation and what the past year has symbolized for him and the band.
Mike Portnoy Reflects on the Significance of Dream Theater’s ‘Parasomnia’ Release
Portnoy expressed that the release date of Parasomnia, February 7, holds special meaning. This date marks the one-year anniversary of the initial recording sessions for the album, making it a poignant moment for all involved.
In his heartfelt message, Portnoy articulates his hopes that longtime fans of the band will embrace the new music as they experience it for the first time. Below is an excerpt from his Instagram post:
Exactly one year ago (to the day!), Feb 7th 2024, the five of us stood in the same room together for the first time in well over a decade?we then spent the majority of the year creating our first album together in 15 years. Today, we can finally share it with all of you?
We could not be prouder or more excited about what we created. We were so inspired being together again and feel we really rose to the occasion to create something special.
Parasomnia represents everything that is classic Dream Theater?mixing tastes of the past with visions of the future? We hope you enjoy this sonic experience. It is best enjoyed in your optimum listening environment..(preferably from start to finish like watching a film). But however you take it in, we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it?

The Remarkable Journey of Mike Portnoy with Dream Theater
In the formative years of Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy often emerged as the most visible member of the band. However, after stepping in for Avenged Sevenfold following the tragic passing of drummer The Rev, he began to explore numerous opportunities outside of the band, leading to a decision to part ways.
After Portnoy’s departure, drummer Mike Mangini admirably filled the role, allowing the band to maintain its position as a powerhouse in the progressive metal genre. Meanwhile, Portnoy ventured into diverse projects, collaborating with artists and bands such as The Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, Adrenaline Mob, Metal Allegiance, Sons of Apollo, and The Winery Dogs.
As time went on, Portnoy rekindled his connections with his former bandmates, with the reunion between him and vocalist James LaBrie occurring last. This reconciliation took place during a show in 2022, which marked a pivotal moment in their relationship.
Though he initially played down the idea of a reunion, Portnoy ultimately rejoined Dream Theater in October 2023, expressing his excitement during a heartfelt announcement.
?I am overwhelmed with joy to be returning home and reuniting with my brothers! There is so much shared history between us all?so many memories, so much music?to think we?re coming up on 40 years since this journey began! The idea of creating new music together is so exciting and I absolutely cannot wait to hit the road and get to play live for a whole new generation of fans that weren?t ever able to see this lineup before? There?s no place like home!!,? Portnoy stated at that time.
In 2024, Dream Theater embarked on their first tour featuring Portnoy since his return, coinciding with the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Over the past year, the band has meticulously crafted Parasomnia, which now stands as their first studio album since Portnoy’s return to the fold.
Parasomnia is currently available for purchase or streaming through the band’s official website. Fans can also find up-to-date tour dates and ticketing information for Dream Theater, as they continue their North American tour celebrating their remarkable 40-year legacy.
