Monkey Holds Steady as Brave New World Plummets

The Monkey is poised to achieve Neon?s second biggest box office opening ever, while Captain America: Brave New World experiences a significant decline in ticket sales.

Last week, Captain America: Brave New World managed to achieve a commendable $100 million over the 4-day opening period, raising questions about its potential to maintain momentum. Many industry observers were concerned about the film’s capacity to evade the substantial drop-off that has plagued superhero films in recent years. While it appears that Brave New World won’t experience a dramatic 78% decline like The Marvels, projections indicate a considerable 68% drop-off. Current estimates suggest that the film may earn approximately $28 million this weekend, a disappointing figure that positions it among the lowest-grossing entries in the Marvel franchise in quite some time.

On the flip side, indie distributor Neon is enjoying a favorable outlook, particularly as they have carved out a niche in the thriving art house horror genre recently. Much like A24, horror aficionados have developed a strong trust in the Neon brand, with Longlegs being their most successful film to date. Directed by Osgood Perkins, who is also at the helm of The Monkey, this new film is anticipated to earn around $14 million. Although this figure falls short of the $22 million garnered by Longlegs, it still represents a significant profit for the distributor. Despite receiving a modest C+ CinemaScore, which is typical for horror films, The Monkey is clearly a divisive piece?viewers either love it or hate it, and we fall into the former category.

In terms of other new releases, the family-oriented film The Unbreakable Boy is projected to have a lackluster opening of approximately $2 million, even with its impressive A CinemaScore rating. In a surprising twist, Heart Eyes managed to outperform its previous week?s earnings, yet expectations suggest a steep 70% decline this weekend, likely due to the competitive presence of The Monkey in theaters.
