Former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese and numerous other musicians have shared their thoughts following Matt Cameron’s departure from the iconic rock band. In a heartfelt social media announcement earlier today (July 7), Cameron disclosed that he is stepping away from the band after an impressive 27-year tenure. He joined Pearl Jam in 1998 as a temporary drummer for Jack Irons, later solidifying his role as a permanent member, contributing to all their albums from the 2000 release of Binaural through to the highly anticipated Dark Matter, set for release in 2024.
In his statement, Cameron noted that there would be “more to follow,” leaving fans and fellow musicians curious about his future endeavors—whether he is embarking on a new musical project or taking a complete hiatus from performing.
Pearl Jam also shared his announcement, expressing their heartfelt wishes for Cameron’s future and emphasizing how much he will be missed by the band and their loyal fans.
Dave Abbruzzese’s Supportive Message to Matt Cameron
Abbruzzese, who was part of Pearl Jam from 1991 to 1994 and contributed to the albums Vs. and Vitalogy, took to his own social media to extend his best wishes to Cameron. He posted, “All the best to the mighty Matt Cameron,” showcasing his respect and admiration for his fellow drummer.
Having been dismissed from Pearl Jam in ’94, Abbruzzese revealed in a 2024 interview that the only members of the band he has maintained contact with over the years are Cameron, original drummer Dave Krusen, and Irons.

“Love you so much,” wrote Lily Cornell Silver, the daughter of the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and his band manager, Susan Silver.
“You are and will continue to be amazing at all you do,” commented Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless.
“Big brother, thanks for sharing your seat with me; I can’t wait to hear what you do next,” added Dave Krusen, the original drummer for Pearl Jam who played on their groundbreaking debut album Ten.
“You have inspired us all and will continue. All the best, Matt,” said Brad Wilk from Rage Against the Machine.
Geddy Lee, the legendary vocalist and bassist from Rush, expressed his gratitude by stating, “Matt – Thanks for all your incredible contributions to music! You are truly the best, and I wish you much love and happiness!”
Rex Brown of Pantera praised Cameron saying, “To one of THE baddest drummers in history: We salute you, Matt!”
