As frontman Gerard Way passionately expressed to the crowd, “We’re going to play you guys what may be the New Jersey state anthem.” This heartfelt statement came after guitarist Frank Iero had enthusiastically requested the song, recalling how he had seen Way perform it during a karaoke session. “I f–king love this song,” Way added, showcasing his genuine excitement and connection to this beloved anthem of working-class pride.

He surprised the band with the prestigious honor of awarding them with the key to the city, recognizing their contributions to music and culture.

“Belleville’s musicians have entertained millions worldwide,” Mayor Melham proudly proclaimed to the cheering crowd. “Their sound has shaped generations and continues to influence artists today.” His heartfelt acknowledgment highlighted the significant impact that My Chemical Romance has had, not only in Belleville but also across the globe.

“Throughout our storied history in Belleville – from Revolutionary War soldiers to Purple Heart recipients, and even a Supreme Court justice, as well as various professional athletes – never once have we handed out a key to the city, and that changes right now,” Melham added, emphasizing the unique honor bestowed upon the band during this memorable event.

Gerard Way, who was reportedly taken by surprise by the honor, graciously accepted the key while remaining in character as the performance of The Black Parade segment required. “We cannot let you leave without giving you a token of our land, Draag,” he humorously told Mayor Melham, adopting an Eastern European accent before presenting him with a bundle of wheat and a “Gubric fish, from the Gubric River.” This lighthearted moment added a unique touch to the evening’s festivities.
