According to reports, Meyers wanted $150 million, but Netflix would only agree to $130 million. During that time, the movie was titled Paris Paramount, with Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender, and Scarlett Johansson expected to star. To note, Paris Paramount is not the comedy’s official title.
When Meyers pitched the film to Netflix, the story revolved around a young writer-director who falls in love with a producer. The pair made several successful films before breaking up, both romantically and professionally. They are forced back together when a new, great project arises, and they find themselves dealing with high stakes and volatile stars. While I’m unfamiliar with much of Meyers’ directorial efforts, her written work on 1991’s Father of the Bride is one of my favorite romantic comedies of the early ’90s. The film features brilliant and touching performances from Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, and Martin Short, with Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, George Newbern, and BD Wong rounding out the cast.
