The family of Barry “Butch” Wilmore is undeniably feeling the emotional impact of his extended stay in space.
Since June, Butch and his fellow NASA astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams have been unexpectedly stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This predicament arose due to significant equipment malfunctions with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which has transformed what was originally planned as an eight-day mission into an uncertain timeline with no definitive end in sight.
Now, nearly nine months past his anticipated return date, his teenage daughter Daryn Wilmore has bravely stepped forward to share her thoughts and feelings regarding this challenging experience.
In a candid interview with the Daily Mail on March 6, she stated, “There are many aspects I’m not able to discuss, and there are things I don’t fully understand.” She expressed her frustration, saying, “However, it is evident that there have been ongoing issues and apparent negligence that have contributed to these persistent delays. It feels like there’s an endless cycle of problems.”
While there are projections for Butch and Suni’s return to Earth this coming spring, Daryn is acutely aware that “the situation is fluid and could shift at any moment.”
She added, “We’ve experienced so many changes along this journey, and it has become quite mentally exhausting for our family.”
