NCIS Season 23 Teases Parker’s Potential Loss of Vance as Ally

Latest updates for NCIS season 23 indicate challenges for Vance and Parker’s professional relationship, which may lead to Parker losing his most significant ally since taking over for Gibbs. As the new team leader, Parker has introduced a different atmosphere to the show and the team, characterized by openness and collaboration, altering the team dynamic.

Some might argue that Parker is a superior NCIS team leader compared to Gibbs due to these traits. However, the murder of his father, orchestrated by mob boss Carla Marino at the end of NCIS season 22, threatens to negatively affect Parker. There are indications that his quest for vengeance could reveal a darker side of the generally amiable Parker. He will need all the support he can muster in NCIS season 23, but he risks losing his greatest ally in this endeavor.

EP Steven D. Binder shared several insights about the upcoming season, revealing that Vance will experience a change in NCIS season 23 that suggests a fracture in his relationship with Alden Parker, which has been strong thus far. According to the original report:

“In the past, Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) has assisted his agents in similar situations. Not this time. ‘We’ve often portrayed Director Vance instructing his team to stay within limits, then he goes, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, leaving files on his desk so they can access what they need. That’s not happening this time,’ warns Binder. There are ‘mysterious reasons’ for why he’s reverting to being ‘very by the book.’ The resulting conflict between Parker and Vance will have lasting effects beyond the episodes that resolve the Carla arc.”

This seems like it will be a significant shift for the director. Vance is not known for being an easygoing or lenient boss, and he doesn’t typically allow his agents to operate freely. However, Binder is correct that Vance has a history of overlooking rules when he believes morality outweighs bureaucracy.

Clearly, his “mysterious reasons” for restricting Parker and his team from accessing certain information will connect to the Carla Marino arc and the murder of Parker’s father. Although Binder has assured that this storyline will conclude relatively quickly, it appears that its repercussions will endure, potentially forever altering Parker’s relationship with Vance.

Parker Has Had A Much Better Rapport With Vance Than Gibbs Once Did

If a rift develops between Parker and Vance, it will mark another significant change in NCIS season 23. So far, Parker and Vance have enjoyed a better working relationship and quicker rapport than Vance ever had with Gibbs. Their initial partnership was not smooth sailing.

At that time, both Gibbs and Vance were struggling with their grief. Their relationship was shaped by tragedy, resulting in both men being emotionally broken at the start of their professional journey together. They often clashed and took years to reach a point of mutual respect. By the time Gibbs departed, they had developed a close bond, but it took considerable time to achieve that.

In contrast, Parker’s relationship with Vance has been much more straightforward from the outset. Vance is nearly two and a half decades older than when he began working with Gibbs. He is now more settled in both his role as NCIS director and in his personal life.

Parker is also older than Gibbs was when he first led the team and has successfully navigated through his own past challenges. Consequently, their relationship has been smoother and mutually supportive without the burden of shared tragedies or growing pains.

Vance Breaking Parker’s Trust Will Lead To An Interesting NCIS Season 23

This disruption in their relationship will introduce an intriguing new dynamic. In previous seasons, Vance has consistently supported Parker, but now—when tracking down the person responsible for his father’s murder—Parker may find that Vance’s assistance is limited by rules.

It’s evident that Vance will have justifiable reasons for this shift, which will be revealed later this season. However, human nature suggests that Parker may perceive it as betrayal since emotions can cloud judgment during times of grief and guilt.

The critical question remains how this will influence their working relationship moving forward and what ripple effects may arise from it. While both are consummate professionals, any significant change in their dynamic is bound to impact the team as well.

If this season finds Vance facing danger himself, it could add complexity to why he’s adhering strictly to protocol—perhaps it’s not just about Parker but also about himself—and how Parker’s team reacts amidst their ongoing rift will be compelling to watch. Regardless of what transpires, NCIS season 23 promises to be quite different from the comfort enjoyed over recent seasons.
