Finally, the NCIS franchise is set to return to Australia, tackling more cases down under. NCIS: Sydney Season 3 has been off the air longer than anticipated after its midseason finale, “South of Nowhere,” was unexpectedly pulled. With the extended hiatus ending on March 3, we are eager to resume where things left off and feature the procedural spin-off in Collider’s Exclusive Preview series for upcoming spring television series and films. A new sneak peek is available, offering a glimpse at the highly anticipated episode and the return of Supervisory Special Agent Michelle Mackey (Olivia Swann) and Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey (Todd Lasance) to screens.
“South of Nowhere” is set not in NCIS: Sydney‘s usual picturesque setting but in Antarctica, where the team faces a tense race against time. Their latest investigation leads them to a research base to uncover why a climate scientist murdered his colleague. However, it’s not as straightforward as obtaining answers since the murder took place on Polar Night Eve. With the polar circle about to enter six months of darkness, they must solve the case and return home before their plane engine freezes, leaving them stranded in one of the coldest and darkest regions on Earth. Additionally, the official promo for the episode reveals the team responding to a biohazard alarm, with “thousands of lives” potentially at stake if their mission fails.
While the episode promises to be a tense, high-stakes operation, our sneak peek opens with the dynamic duo of Michelle and JD on their flight to Antarctica, where JD appears lost in thought. Although he insists nothing is wrong, he awkwardly brings up a special someone he met online, surprising his NCIS partner. It turns out it’s their one-month anniversary since he first contacted her on a dating app, but he regrettably had to cancel due to the mission’s urgency. Michelle is quick to comfort him, assuring him that his date will understand the delay. However, JD is troubled by a curious, raunchy emoji message that suggests he may not be quite ready for modern dating.
Will ‘NCIS: Sydney’ Be Back for Season 4?
Sydney has unexpectedly become a significant part of the NCIS family since its debut in 2023. Initially, the plan was for this first international spin-off to air mainly in Australia via Paramount+ with some international distribution; however, due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it was thrust into U.S. primetime where it quickly gained popularity. The series has provided a fresh take on the procedural formula by showcasing NCIS’s collaboration with the Australian Federal Police to combat rising crime in the Indo-Pacific and focusing on the evolving relationship between Mackey and Dempsey. Their main team consists of agents from both organizations including Sean Sagar, Tuuli Narkle, Mavournee Hazel, and William McInnes.
Season 3 — which is shaping up to be the largest yet for the spin-off — commenced with intrigue following a cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. Viewers finally discovered more about the mysterious woman who appeared in Blue’s (Hazel) home while the team dealt with a case involving two missing U.S. naval aviators found adrift in the Coral Sea. Mackey also faced challenges stemming from events in Darwin involving her friend Etienne (John Fabry). Overall, series showrunner and creator Morgan O’Neill has hinted that this season will explore how agents’ pasts come back to haunt them in various ways, with plenty of time left for resolution as 11 episodes remain after the midseason premiere. Earlier this year, the Sydney team was also confirmed for another season as part of a sweeping renewal for all NCIS shows on CBS.
NCIS: Sydney Season 3 continues on March 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+. Check out our exclusive sneak peek in the player above and stay tuned here at Collider throughout the week for more previews from our spring series.
