Neo-Western Taylor Sheridan Disappoints Fans with New Streamer

Key Takeaways

 • Taylor Sheridan’s films include critically acclaimed works like Sicario and Hell or High Water.
 • Without Remorse, co-written with Will Staples, received negative reviews, holding a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
 • Sicario: Day of the Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima, earned a 62% critics’ score.
 • Upcoming projects include the action-thriller F.A.S.T., set for release in 2027.

Two movies stick out like sore thumbs on Taylor Sheridan‘s otherwise pristine resume. The writer broke out with Sicario, which remains one of the most respected neo-Westerns of the 2010s. He followed it up with Hell or High Water, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Sheridan went on to write and direct Wind River, which served as the final installment of his spiritually connected neo-Western trilogy. By this time, Sheridan had also found himself at the creative helm of Yellowstone, which would go on to inspire a franchise and become a platform-defining hit for Paramount+. Sheridan then wrote and directed the home-video favorite Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie. But these were all the movies that people liked. The two that stick out haven’t exactly found an audience even years after their release. Now, one of them is heading to a new streaming home.

The other is Without Remorse, which was designed as something of a franchise-starter for Michael B. Jordan and released in 2021 on Prime Video. Sheridan was credited as a co-writer on the script with Will Staples, which is highly unusual for him — he famously writes solo. Directed by Stefano Sollima, the film remains perhaps the least-liked project with Sheridan’s name on it. Without Remorse holds a 45% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Despite a commanding performance from Michael B. Jordan, Without Remorse fails to escape its outdated patriotic tropes and forced franchise place settings.”

Here’s the Taylor Sheridan Film That Left Fans Underwhelmed

The other movie, coincidentally, was also directed by Sollima. We’re talking about Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the movie that Sheridan admitted in an interview with Collider left the studio concerned about its commercial viability. A sequel to the 2015 original, Sicario 2 brought back Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, and earned noticeably weaker reviews. It now holds a 62% critics’ score and a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Though less subversive than its predecessor, Sicario: Day of the Soldado succeeds as a stylish, dynamic thriller — even if its amoral machismo makes for grim viewing.” Sheridan has remained occupied with his numerous television projects for the last few years, but he’s set to make a comeback to film writing with the action-thriller F.A.S.T., directed by Ben Richardson and slated for release in 2027.

You can watch Sicario 2 on Starz beginning March 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
