A New Jersey neighborhood was shaken to its core over the weekend when a mass shooting erupted, resulting in the deaths of a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman, while three others were injured.
Cops in Newark report that gunfire broke out around 7 PM when witnesses described a flurry of rapid shots followed by chaos in the street. One woman recounted hearing more than six rounds and a lot of screaming before police secured the area.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that two victims, the young boy and the 21-year-old woman, were taken to the hospital but could not be saved. Three additional victims, including an 11-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 60, are reported to be in stable condition.
Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka described it as a “dark and devastating day,” stating, “Our city mourns the loss of the baby, and the depraved and senseless killing of a 21-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy taken from their parents as their young lives were just blossoming.”
The mayor emphasized that Newark will collaborate closely with state, federal, and county officials to ensure that the shooter is brought to justice. He also issued a warning and a plea for the gunman to surrender.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest as the city grapples with this senseless violence.
