The acclaimed guitarist of Stone Temple Pilots, Dean DeLeo, has unveiled “Can of Worms,” marking the release of the second captivating single from his exciting new project, One More Satellite. This collaboration features the talented vocalist Pete Shoulder, and you can enjoy the song by listening below.
Fans can eagerly anticipate the launch of their self-titled debut album, which is set to be released on July 18 through Symphonic. This upcoming album was initially teased with the first single, “Paper Over the Cracks,” which premiered in early May. DeLeo shared insights about the music, stating, “The record definitely explores a lot of different types of music. I mean, there’s two instrumentals on the record,” he explained to UCR. “It explores a lot of different moods,” showcasing the album’s rich diversity.
“Can of Worms” serves as another brilliant illustration of the varied material featured on this album, drawing deeply from the personal life experiences of the artists involved. “It’s a song about courting chaos. It’s about that itch you keep scratching even when you know it’s going to bleed,” Shoulder elaborated in an email. “A danger sign but it’s written in lipstick, so you follow it anyway,” emphasizing the theme of engaging with risk and emotional turmoil in a compelling way.
Discover the Talented Collaborators Behind ‘One More Satellite’
The creation of One More Satellite has been a familial endeavor, reflecting a close-knit collaboration. DeLeo’s son, Rocco, showcases his drumming skills on three tracks, while his daughter, June, contributes her vocal talents to the song “Your Call.” Adding to the experience, DeLeo’s longtime bandmate from Stone Temple Pilots, drummer Eric Kretz, makes a guest appearance on the track “Serenade,” while Brian Tichy, renowned for his work with Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, and Foreigner, handles drumming duties for the remaining tracks.
The album’s production was a collaborative effort, co-produced and mixed by the talented Ryan Williams, a longtime collaborator of DeLeo. The process was described as casual and organic, with DeLeo stating, “Everything was written fairly recently over the last year or so.” He elaborated, “You know, I never really sit down to write a song like I’m going to sit down and write a song. It’s almost as if I have this energetic thing sitting in front of me.” This approach highlights DeLeo’s spontaneous creativity, where he feels inspired before he even knows what he will play, often leading to unexpected musical discoveries.
As the release date for the new album approaches, DeLeo reassures fans that he will remain busy with various projects. “We’re staying busy [with shows] in STP for the rest of the year. One More Satellite will be out [in July]. Tom Bukovac and I [also recently] have already laid down our first track for the upcoming second Trip the Witch record. We hope to have it out sometime, possibly in early 2026. There’s never a shortage of music happening around here,” he confirmed, indicating a vibrant musical future.
