Nintendo has already released one major film and has two more in development, but according to a recent presentation today, they have no intention of slowing down after those.
What are Nintendo’s future films for video game movies?
During a presentation to investors today (via IGN), Nintendo disclosed that it continues to invest in films based on some of its most iconic games. The company stated that it is “building a framework for a consistent release cadence” of films, and while they did not announce new titles, it appears there are more plans to keep producing films.
Currently, Nintendo has released only one film, its breakout feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Next year, a sequel titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to premiere on April 3, 2026. Additionally, a film based on The Legend of Zelda is also in development, with a projected release window set for 2027.
“We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of films in the future,” Nintendo stated regarding its future plans.
Next up for Nintendo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will serve as a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, based on a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel. It featured a star-studded cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, all of whom are set to return for the sequel.
As the title suggests, Super Mario Galaxy follows Mario as he travels across the stars in an effort to save Princess Peach and, this time, the universe from Bowser. While it remains unclear if the film will adhere closely to the game’s storyline, the game features Mario traveling from planet to planet, each with unique locations, characters, and terrains.
