While Superman might be renowned for his incredible speed, unmatched strength, and the ability to leap over tall buildings in a single bound, his capacity to provide guidance seems to fall short. This was the experience of David Corenswet, who reached out to two actors who previously donned the iconic cape. Their responses shed light on a unique aspect of the Superman character that extends beyond his superhuman abilities.
In anticipation of the much-awaited release of Superman on July 11th, David Corenswet shared his experience of communicating with Henry Cavill, known for his role in the DCEU, and Tyler Hoechlin, who portrayed Clark Kent in Supergirl and later in Superman & Lois. Interestingly, both actors chose not to impart any specific advice. As Corenswet remarked, “I had the pleasure of exchanging letters with two previous Supermans, Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin. Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try to give you any tips.’ And I think that’s a very Superman thing — Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
Nonetheless, Corenswet found that his fellow Superman actors were not entirely unhelpful. They conveyed a message of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the role. He noted, “They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of, you know, have fun with it, which I think is Superman’s way of doing it too. They were very encouraging and we had a lovely exchange…I’m excited to meet them one day, it’ll be great when we can all get in a room together.” This camaraderie among Superman actors exemplifies the community spirit within the superhero genre, reminiscent of popular cultural references like the iconic Spider-Man meme.
As the top choice for James Gunn in his efforts to revitalize the DC Universe, David Corenswet is also rumored to make a brief appearance in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. With the official launch of the new DC Universe happening with Superman this week, fans can look forward to a series of exciting films, including Clayface, The Authority, Swamp Thing, and The Brave and the Bold.
Recently, projections indicated that Superman would achieve an impressive opening weekend gross of around $125 million, though I believe it could surpass that figure. For context, Man of Steel had a $117 million opening weekend back in 2013, and James Gunn will be aiming to launch the DCU on a high note, setting the stage for its future films.
