Noah Assad Discusses Dangerous Bunny’s Puerto Rico Residency

Over two years ago, Ariana Madix’s life took a dramatic turn on Bravo, following the infamous cheating scandal from “Vanderpump Rules,” which became widely known as the Scandoval. While the news was certainly distressing, the silver lining was that Madix managed to navigate the chaos with remarkable poise, leading to numerous transformative opportunities once the dust settled. Following her breakup with Tom Sandoval, a fellow castmate from “Vanderpump Rules,” in March 2023, Madix was cast for the fall season of “Dancing With the Stars.” She also took on the role of Roxie Hart in “Chicago” on Broadway—twice! Furthermore, during the summer of 2024, she became the host of Peacock’s “Love Island USA” for its sixth season. Her appearance as the host introduced a wave of new viewers to the dating show, propelling it to become last summer’s top-rated reality series and a cultural phenomenon.

As Madix prepared for her trip to Fiji for Season 7—unaware of the new season’s dynamics, which premiered on June 3—she took a moment to sit down with Variety at her West Hollywood sandwich shop, Something About Her, co-owned with her friend Katie Maloney, also a former “Vanderpump Rules” cast member. During this conversation, she shared her enthusiasm for “Love Island,” reflected on her first experience stepping onto the stage for “Chicago,” and discussed her experiences filming Season 11 of “Vanderpump Rules,” which may feature an entirely new cast upon its eventual return.

Your Love for “Love Island”: Which Version Captivated You First?

Interestingly, it was actually the Australian version that first caught my attention. My friend Brad introduced me to it during the pandemic and said, “You have to check this out; I think it might become our new favorite show.” I found myself binge-watching the Australian version, which quickly led me to explore the U.K. adaptation, and eventually, I delved into the U.S. version as well. The engaging format and vibrant cast kept me hooked throughout.

Revitalizing the Struggling U.S. Version: What Changes Did You Envision?

I have immense admiration for the various women who have hosted “Love Island” across different countries. I believe that each host brings their unique flair to the show. Regardless of previous formats, I knew that trying to emulate what others have done wouldn’t resonate. My goal was to infuse my authentic self into the hosting role. I aimed to exude confidence, even if it sometimes felt like I was faking it until I made it, while also bringing a playful sense of humor. “Love Island” distinguishes itself from many other dating shows, primarily through its distinct level of humor that creates a relatable atmosphere for viewers.

Moreover, I was determined to deliver some stunning looks as the host, drawing inspiration from other global hosts. For instance, when Maya Jama walks into the U.K. villa, she embodies sheer confidence and style, which I aspire to bring into my own hosting experience.

The Impact of Your Hosting on Viewership: Did You Notice a Shift?

I’ve seen many discussions online suggesting that viewers who hadn’t previously tuned in may have started watching because they were curious about my hosting. However, I believe the real reason they stayed was the incredible cast and the connections they formed throughout the season. Our cast was genuinely exceptional, and I think that is what truly resonated with viewers.

Expressing Your Opinions: A Different Approach Compared to Past Hosts

Somewhat, yes!

What Did You Mean by That?

What I meant is that I had to hold back a lot of my thoughts. While I’m not supposed to display bias, I have the advantage of seeing footage that the Islanders haven’t. If something significant happens, I feel a responsibility to encourage them to discuss it. This was particularly evident during the Casa Amor recoupling, where I made sure to facilitate that discussion. “Aftersun” serves as a great platform for me to express my thoughts more candidly after the episodes air. However, while I’m in the villa, I find it interesting to have to maintain my composure in front of the contestants since I can’t show any bias.

Doesn’t Your Humanity Shine Through?

Absolutely! I’m a person, and I can’t help but empathize with what they’re experiencing. I don’t want to come off as robotic. While my emotions might come through to the camera, I strive to keep them from affecting the contestants directly.

Empowering Contestants: Your Presence and Influence

Wow! I appreciate that perspective. The contestants are impressively strong and articulate, especially considering they are much younger than I was during my time on “Vanderpump.” Their ability to stand up for themselves and express their feelings at such a young age is truly commendable. They are doing an excellent job of navigating their experiences.

Your Fashion Statements: What Message Do You Aim to Convey?

I collaborate closely with my friend Emily [Men] who assists me in curating my looks. I often share images of outfits I admire on Instagram, and Emily has a talent for sourcing similar styles. One of the challenges we face is that fashion PR agencies or designers typically want their items returned within a couple of days, making it difficult to maintain a wardrobe for an extended period. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to hold onto many of the outfits for the entire duration of our time in Fiji. I plan to meet with her soon for my fitting.

Lessons Learned from Season 6: What Will You Bring to This Season?

I’ve gained valuable insights from Season 6, particularly regarding the challenges of not being able to express my thoughts and feelings in real-time with the Islanders. Understanding the distinction between being a host versus being part of the cast has been enlightening. Additionally, I’ve become acutely aware of the slippery spots on the deck, as it can get quite slick. Sometimes, they wet it down to create a shiny appearance, which requires me to exercise caution!

Did You Ever Experience a Slip on Stage?

Oh, absolutely! There were definitely moments where I wobbled, thinking, “I’m going to turn around and try this again. You didn’t see that!” I learned to embody a confident, commanding presence when entering the Villa, which is quite different from my everyday self. In my daily life, I don’t typically strut into my sandwich shop and demand attention. This experience has taught me how to embrace that character and feel comfortable doing so.

Let’s Change the Topic: Your First Experience on Stage in “Chicago”

The first time stepping on stage for “Chicago” was both terrifying and exhilarating. I felt an immense wave of nerves wash over me as the audience erupted with applause.

The Crowd Was Supportive, But Did You Struggle to Hear?

Absolutely! At times, the crowd was so loud that I could barely hear the band on stage. I thought, “Well, let’s hope we’ve practiced enough for these moments!” One of my castmates, Jeff Gorti, reassured me when I expressed my nerves by saying, “You have nothing to prove; just go out there and showcase your talent.”

That perspective was refreshing and shifted my mindset. I often feel the pressure to prove myself, but I realized that the focus was really about enjoying the performance.

You Returned for a Second Performance: Would You Consider Doing It Again?

I would absolutely love to reprise my role as Roxie and even take on another show. The experience was incredibly fulfilling.

Reflecting on “Vanderpump Rules”: Your Decision to Return After the Scandal

I felt a strong desire to return to “Vanderpump Rules.” At that point, I wasn’t in a position where I could afford to turn down work. So, saying yes to “Vanderpump Rules” felt necessary. However, moving forward, I wanted to be in a space where I could choose to say no if I wasn’t feeling great. I cherish the show for various reasons, but when you feel like you don’t have a choice, it creates a challenging dynamic.

The Impact of the Scandal: Opportunities vs. Personal Turmoil

It was incredibly difficult! I often feel frustrated when discussing my career, and the narrative shifts to focus on others or makes my personal journey about someone else. Phrases like “post-breakup glow up” are particularly disheartening as they imply I was lesser before. That period was profoundly challenging for me. Interestingly, my two closest friends often reminisce about old pictures that pop up on their phones.

Memories from That Period: A Strange Time for You

It was an odd time indeed. There are countless pictures of us together, including some candid shots of me resting in bed, which seem to imply I was doing just fine. The reality was much more complicated, filled with beautiful yet terrifying moments. The headlines captured a different narrative, while the truth behind the scenes was far more somber. I wasn’t planning to share the depths of my struggles on “Vanderpump Rules” Season 11.

For instance, I was in the process of packing up my room, trying to reclaim my space, when the film crew showed up to capture everything. They didn’t portray my efforts to relocate correctly; instead, they edited the footage to tell a different story, overlooking my struggle with a real estate agent or meeting with lenders.

Feeling Like a Squatter in Your Own Home

Exactly! The situation was incredibly frustrating. As if it wasn’t difficult enough trying to uproot from what I thought would be my home for a decade, I was also being portrayed as some sort of loser for simply trying to organize my life.

Discussing Mental Health: Where Were You When Filming Season 11 Began?

I was gradually improving, perhaps slightly better than before. However, it was challenging because I wanted to be transparent about my journey. You can see me trying to sort out my life on camera, figuring out my next steps, and determining where I would be living. I had to get pre-approved for a mortgage, as I needed to move out of my current home.

Challenges of Securing a Mortgage While Having Another Mortgage

That was my biggest hurdle. I eventually managed to secure it, but it required a much larger down payment than I anticipated. I wanted to authentically showcase my situation, presenting all the ups and downs. However, since the episodes aired months after filming wrapped, many viewers were confused about my state of mind during the airing.

Do people understand how time works? Are they aware of the timeline?

Frustration with the Misunderstanding of Time and Context

I believe it’s crucial to illustrate where I was at during that time. If someone can relate to my experiences, it makes sharing worthwhile. My mental health began to improve significantly while participating in “Dancing With the Stars,” as it provided me with a physical outlet to express myself.

Addressing Gender Dynamics: Your Argument with a Cast Member

At the moment, I wasn’t particularly concerned about how the show would portray my feelings. I was focused on being my authentic self. Society often conditions women not to express their anger, and even other women may criticize those who do.

However, I find female rage incredibly powerful and beautiful. I often feel moved to tears when I witness it in other women. I’ve learned that my anger can be a strong motivator for me, rather than something to be feared.

Instead of shying away from it, I’ve learned to harness that power, channeling it productively and letting it guide me toward my goals.

The Explosive Finale of “Vanderpump Rules”: Were You Aware of the Aftermath?

I was aware that things were getting heated, and I thought to myself, “I knew it!”

Leaving for Applebee’s: What Was That Like?

Indeed. I felt vindicated, thinking, “I just proved my point! Show your true selves.” Especially knowing my ex was behaving in such a way, I thought, “This is exactly what I’ve been saying! This entire situation is fake.”

The Dynamics of Sharing Space: How Did You Feel About Him Approaching You?

When he approached me, asking, “Can I just talk?” I thought, “See? If you can’t get what you want and you react like that, you’re only proving my point.” I was enjoying my Buffalo chicken wings while reflecting on the situation, feeling quite old-fashioned. I remember taking shots of Fireball, trying to process everything.

Watching the Reunion: What Were Your Thoughts on the Finale?

The final moments of the show were incredibly satisfying.

Did Sandoval’s Statement Resonate with You?

Absolutely! The moment he said, “It’s good for me,” was reminiscent of the Robert Durst confession. I thought, “Let that be your last moment.” It felt perfectly fitting, and I was thinking, “This is what I’ve been saying all along!” It’s amusing to think I would be the one to recognize that.

However, watching the clips from the past and reflecting on everything was truly emotional. It’s hard to believe how many years have passed and how far we’ve come.

Did You Know Ahead of Time About the Reboot of “Vanderpump Rules”?

Yes, I was informed.

Your Thoughts on the Reboot?

I said, “Cool! Wishing you all the best with that.”

Do You Watch “The Valley”?

I don’t. I steer clear of Bravo shows.

Any Reality Shows You Enjoy?

“Love After Lockup” is a guilty pleasure of mine.

What Makes It So Enjoyable?

It’s just so captivating!

Who Are Your Closest Friends on “The Valley”?

I’m probably closest to Janet, Kristen, and Jasmine — but also very close to Janet and Jason as a couple. We traveled to Scotland together.

Any Chance We’ll See You on “The Valley”?

No, that won’t happen.

Your Thoughts on Jax Taylor’s Situation?

From what I know, it’s truly unfortunate. I’m proud of Brittany for finding her voice and moving on from that.

Reflecting on James Kennedy’s Arrest: Your Thoughts?

That’s terrible! I mean, it’s distressing. Again, I’m really glad for Ally [Lewber] for getting out of that situation and thriving. She has an amazing podcast and a lovely home. I’m just happy she’s doing well.

What’s the Status of Your Old House?

There’s more to it than just the house itself. But yes, it’s moving forward.

Is It Currently For Sale?

No, it’s not just a matter of listing it for sale—there are contents and other factors that need to be addressed. However, I’m fine with it. The longer I hold onto it, the more equity I build. I have my own space now, and it’s more important to me that everything is resolved properly than to rush into a sale.

Your Vision for the Future: Where Do You See Yourself in the Coming Years?

I envision myself here for at least the next five to ten years. Professionally, I’m not in a position to relocate to a place like New York, as I would likely just return. I’m deeply engaged with my work here, particularly with the shop, and I want to be present for that. While I adore New York and hope to return one day, I’m currently enjoying the space and opportunities that L.A. has to offer. Despite its reputation, I believe it’s a wonderful city.

The Performance of Your Restaurant: How Is It Doing?

Things are going well! It’s true when they say that opening a restaurant is challenging. It presents a unique set of difficulties, but thankfully, Katie and I genuinely love our staff and enjoy working together. We have a shared vision for the restaurant.

However, we rely heavily on tourist traffic, which we appreciate. We encourage everyone to visit! Nevertheless, we are also looking to tap into the local market and the vibrant food scene in L.A.

Which Sandwich Represents the Greek Salad?

We’ve got a salad sandwich now.

What’s Special About It?

It’s deliciously messy, which is why we decided to switch it up. We could wrap it, though!

Could I Order That to Go, Please?
