NOLA King Series Seeks New Showrunner for Future Seasons

Tulsa King has encountered significant challenges in retaining showrunners, and it appears that the upcoming spinoff series, NOLA King, is facing similar issues even before its official launch. This situation raises questions about the continuity and creative direction of both series.

According to a report from Variety, Dave Erickson will no longer be the showrunner for NOLA King. The reason cited for this sudden change is a scheduling conflict that has arisen, prompting Paramount+ to initiate a search for a new replacement. It’s important to note that NOLA King has not yet been officially greenlit by Paramount+, which adds to the uncertainty surrounding the project. This anticipated series is set to feature the legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson in the role of a notorious gangster in the vibrant city of New Orleans. Jackson’s character will make his debut in the forthcoming third season of Tulsa King, where he will confront Sylvester Stallone’s character, Dwight “The General” Manfredi, in what promises to be an exciting showdown.

In the first season of Tulsa King, Terence Winter served as the showrunner before stepping down due to creative differences with the series creator, Taylor Sheridan. Despite his departure, Winter returned as a writer for the second season, during which the show functioned without a traditional showrunner. Following this, Dave Erickson was brought on board to lead the production for the highly anticipated third season. This continuous change in leadership raises intriguing questions about the future direction of both series and their ability to maintain a consistent tone and narrative style.

In an interview with Collider shortly after the announcement, Jackson expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Taylor Sheridan universe. He stated, “I’m really happy to be in that universe,” sharing his excitement about the new role. “I was just talking to Pierce [Brosnan] about that earlier. I watched Tulsa King, and I liked it even before that idea came up. I know very little about what’s going to happen. I don’t know the character’s name. I don’t know what our history is. I don’t know anything about it, but I do know that I’m very anxious to jump into it and find out what it’s going to be.” His excitement hints at the potential for a compelling character development and storytelling that fans can anticipate.

The production of Tulsa King season 3 has recently concluded, although an official release date has yet to be announced. However, it is anticipated that the new season will premiere on Paramount+ later this year, much to the anticipation of its dedicated fan base.

Our own Alex Maidy has expressed his admiration for the second season of Tulsa King, stating that it’s “as good if not better” than its predecessor. He noted, “This new season further distinguishes itself from other Taylor Sheridan-created series rather than getting lumped in as another show from the guy who made Yellowstone,” highlighting the unique narrative style of the show. “Tulsa King is violent, funny, and the best mob series to hit the air since The Sopranos.” For those interested, you can read the entirety of his review right here.
