Renowned musician Neil Young has a pointed message directed towards President Donald Trump following the latter’s recent criticisms of fellow artist Bruce Springsteen.
In a recent outburst on social media, President Trump attacked Springsteen, who has openly criticized what he perceives as a “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration” during his concerts. Trump disparaged Springsteen, labeling him a “dried out prune of a rocker” and urged him to “keep his mouth shut” regarding American politics. Springsteen chose not to respond publicly to Trump’s remarks.
In response, Young took to his website to voice his thoughts: “Bruce and thousands of musicians believe you are ruining America. You need to focus on real issues, like the dying kids in Gaza, instead of worrying about what musicians are saying. That’s your challenge. I am not intimidated by you, and neither are others. You shut down FEMA when we needed it the most. That’s your failing, Trump. Focus on restoring America from the chaos you’ve created.”
Young’s statement continued with a strong critique: “Your priorities seem to be more about yourself than about America.” He urged Trump to “wake up” and remember the responsibilities tied to the White House, emphasizing, “…you work for us. It’s time for Republicans to realize this man is out of control. We require a true leader!”
Young concluded his statement with a collective endorsement: “Signed, Neil Young and many others.”
Exploring Neil Young’s Ongoing Conflict with President Trump
Young has previously expressed concerns about potential repercussions during his upcoming overseas concerts, particularly regarding speaking out against Trump.
He noted, “When I travel to perform in Europe, should I mention Donald J Trump, I could be among those who are barred from returning to America or even face detention on a cold cement floor with nothing but an aluminum blanket,” as he detailed on his site (via The Guardian). “This is becoming increasingly common. Various countries have updated their guidance for those returning to the U.S.”
Young’s tour is set to return to the United States in August.
“If I were to return from Europe and find myself barred from performing in my U.S. tour, it would mean that all the fans who purchased tickets would miss out on my concert,” he elaborated. “This is the reality, folks. If you criticize Trump or his administration, it’s possible you could face restrictions on re-entering the U.S. if you are Canadian. For dual citizens like myself, the outcome remains uncertain. We’ll navigate this together.”
Having been a vocal critic of President Trump over the years, Young was born and raised in Canada but obtained U.S. citizenship in 2020. His wife, actress and filmmaker Daryl Hannah, mentioned recently that Young’s citizenship process was nearly complicated by Trump’s first term in office.

She recounted, “They employed every tactic to complicate his process, insisting on repeated interviews and interrogations,” she shared with the San Francisco Chronicle last month, also highlighting concerns regarding re-entry into the United States.
“While they have been detaining individuals with green cards or visas—an egregious and alarming situation—there have not been any reports of denying re-entry to American citizens,” she stated, expressing confidence that Young would not face such issues.
