This announcement followed Holloway’s sentencing on a Friday in Madison County Circuit Court, marking a significant moment in a case that has captivated public attention and raised discussions about mental health interventions.

The court imposed a sentence that included 30 years for the charge of homicide, 20 years for the intentional murder of an unborn child, and an additional 10 years for the concealment of a homicidal death. These sentences are to be served consecutively, as reported by Law & Crime. Importantly, Holloway must complete 52 years in prison before he can even be considered for early release, reflecting the severity of his actions and their impact on the victims’ families.

The sentencing breakdown revealed that Holloway received a 30-year term for homicide, 20 years for murder, and 10 years for concealment, all to be served one after the other. In addition, Holloway is now required to serve a minimum of 52 years before he can be eligible for any form of early release.

Following his arrest, Holloway’s stepfather spoke candidly with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, revealing that his stepson had been experiencing auditory hallucinations for years. His mother expressed their desperation in seeking help, stating that they had faced multiple rejections when trying to access mental health resources for Holloway.

The statement from the Attorney?s Office indicated that during Holloway?s trial, his defense team raised concerns regarding his mental fitness to stand trial. This led to court-ordered psychological evaluations, during which he was initially deemed mentally unfit. Consequently, he spent months receiving treatment at a state facility before being declared mentally fit for trial.

?For the family and loved ones of Liese, these ongoing issues have caused profound distress and uncertainty. This guilty conviction brings some closure,? Haine stated in the official statement. ?Our hope is that this conviction and sentence provide the family and their loved ones with a sense of assurance and represents a step towards healing.?

Haine also remarked on the emotional toll of the case, stating, ?This situation has been incredibly challenging for everyone involved. Clearly, it has been traumatic for Liese?s family. With this resolution, they have been spared the further trauma that comes with a trial. My heart goes out to the family, whose strength, courage, and resilience during this process have been truly commendable.?

After Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido labeled Holloway a ?freaking savage monster? in a video that was later removed, his parents responded with their perspective in an interview with the Post-Dispatch, highlighting their struggle to address their son’s severe mental health challenges.

Stepparent Christopher J. Hawk disclosed that Holloway had been plagued by auditory hallucinations, stating he heard “three voices that spoke to him.” He emphasized that one of these voices, identified as Ruth, was particularly harmful, telling him whom he could trust and influencing his perception of reality in negative ways.

His mother, Carla Hawk, expressed frustration over their repeated attempts to secure help for their son, noting that the system had continuously denied them access to necessary mental health resources on the basis that they could not compel an adult to seek treatment.

Carla further lamented, ?We never stopped fighting for him. What happened to our son is horrific and could have been prevented if the system had intervened earlier to provide him with therapy, coping strategies, and guidance on recognizing triggers.?

The couple also revealed that Holloway had been resistant to medication, and in 2021, he had made threats to kill his mother and sister, prompting her to obtain a temporary restraining order, which she later chose not to renew.

As they discussed their son?s mental health challenges, Christopher offered his condolences to the Dodd family, stating, ?I cannot imagine what you must be going through. I am profoundly sorry for your loss.?

He continued, ?I cannot deny that what occurred was an extreme act of evil. It truly was. I am at a loss as to how to explain it. We are ashamed of what has transpired.?

?His mother and sister were both in shock. While we knew he had the potential for violence, we never anticipated he could commit such a horrific act. We have been trying to secure help for him for at least the last three years. Now he is being held accountable because of his actions.?

?Our system fails individuals with mental health issues. People are often left to navigate their struggles alone. It?s a tragic situation,? he added, underscoring the gaps in mental health services.

?The fact that he committed an evil act does not mean he is a monster. He is a human being who deserves to be treated with humanity,? he concluded, specifically addressing Pulido?s harsh characterization of his stepson.

He wrapped up his thoughts by stating, ?I am not arguing that he did not commit this act. I know he did. However, we must take mental health seriously; otherwise, we will never see an end to such tragedies.?

Holloway was apprehended approximately 45 minutes from Alton by the Gillespie Police Department after a report concerning a stolen bicycle. Initially arrested on theft charges, he refused to identify himself. However, upon transfer to Macoupin County Jail, he was recognized and subsequently linked to the murder, highlighting the inefficiencies in initial law enforcement procedures.

He faced multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts related to the intentional murder of an unborn child, dismemberment of a human body, concealment of a homicidal death, and various motor vehicle offenses.

According to the sentencing press release, the State?s Attorney?s Office clarified that he was ultimately convicted of only one count of murder. This limitation was due to a ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court, which determined that an unborn child could not be classified as a second murder victim for the purposes of imposing a life sentence.

On June 9, 2022, Liese Dodd, 22, was discovered dead in her home by her mother. This devastating incident occurred just before her mother was set to host a baby shower for her daughter, who was due in July. Tragically, authorities reported that Holloway disposed of her head in a dumpster located just outside her apartment building, an act that deepens the horror surrounding this case, as reported by CBS affiliate KMOV.

According to police reports, Dodd and Holloway had been involved in an ?on-and-off dating relationship? for approximately two years, a dynamic that adds complexity to the circumstances leading to the tragic outcome of this case, as noted by Police Chief Pulido.

?She was brutally, brutally murdered. She was decapitated. Decapitated by a freaking savage monster,? Police Chief Pulido stated in that now-removed video. ?Her unborn child was also killed as a result of this act. So she was violently murdered alongside her unborn child.?

In the aftermath of her death, Dodd?s mother, Heidi Noel, described her daughter as ?a bright light who cared for everyone? and someone who ?had a big heart? and would ?go out of her way to help people.?

?She had pursued her education and was planning to enter the medical field,? added Noel, revealing that the entire family was ?excited and gathering items needed for the baby.?

Following Holloway?s sentencing, Noel conveyed to Fox affiliate KTVI, ?This is a tragic outcome of a two-year on-and-off domestic violence relationship. This did not have to end this way; my daughter should be here raising her child.?
