At Collider, we’re dedicated to bringing you the latest news, interviews, and behind-the-scenes looks at every aspect of your favorite movies and television shows. Now, we’re combining our love for on-screen entertainment with our passion for music. This week, we are thrilled to launch our new video series, On the Record, and our first episode is already out for you to watch below! In On the Record, Collider video host Michael Zimmermann will take your favorite filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals to a local record shop for a unique interview about the music that shaped them and the impact it’s had on their creative work.
In our first episode of On the Record, Zimmermann is chatting with The Running Man director Edgar Wright. As Wright and Zimmerman walk around New York City record shop Limited To One, they discuss a handful of albums like David Bowie’s Lodger, which happens to be the first concert Wright ever attended, The Beatles’ White Album, and Greatest Hits by Sly and the Family Stone. They also discuss iconic scores like John Carpenter and Alan Howarth‘s work on Escape From New York and Jerry Goldsmith‘s Logan’s Run, which made the perfect soundtrack for scriptwriting as Wright worked on The Running Man with Michael Bacall.
For Wright, if you’re going to include a needle drop in your movie, loving the song itself is essential because, as a filmmaker, you’re going to hear it over and over until the movie is finalized. Luckily, when Bacall wrote “Underdog” by Sly and the Family Stone into the opening of The Running Man, Wright knew it was the perfect choice.
