The talented guitarist of Stone Temple Pilots, Dean DeLeo, made an appearance on Loudwire Nights on Wednesday, May 28, where he discussed the exciting upcoming release of the debut album from his new music project, One More Satellite. This new venture showcases DeLeo’s collaboration with the remarkable singer and songwriter Pete Shoulder. To dive deeper into their conversation, be sure to listen to the complete interview in the player located towards the end of this article.

Reflecting on their meeting, DeLeo shared, “We met back in 2015,” during his chat with host Chuck Armstrong.
“[My brother] My brother Robert and I were introduced to Pete through the acclaimed photographer Ross Halfin — and we hit it off immediately. We even recorded some material together back in 2017, featuring Robert, Pete, and the phenomenal drummer Brian Tichy.”
DeLeo disclosed that the band completed an entire record in 2017, but it has remained unreleased for several years now.
“I’m doing everything in my power to ensure it finally sees the light of day,” he expressed passionately.
The first single from this new collaboration with Shoulder, titled “Paper Over the Cracks,” unmistakably carries echoes of the iconic Stone Temple Pilots sound.
DeLeo candidly remarked, “I’ve been trying to escape my own style for three decades, but it seems I can’t shake it off,” reflecting on his musical journey.
“Everyone has their unique imprint, and this is simply me doing my thing while Pete expresses his artistry.”
Exploring the Joy of Collaboration: Dean DeLeo’s Musical Journey
Dean DeLeo has a rich history of collaborating with various artists and forming new bands. From his pivotal role in creating Stone Temple Pilots to his later project, Army of Anyone, DeLeo thrives when surrounded by talented musicians. He stated, “Having the privilege of being in a band with my brother and Eric [Kretz] and Scott [Weiland] has been invaluable; you are only as strong as your collaborators.”
“Those musicians elevate my sound significantly. I’ve learned so much about songwriting from them. My brother Robert, in particular, possesses an extensive knowledge of chords that far exceeds my own. I’ve absorbed a great deal from him regarding musical approach and style, which is evident in my playing on this record, as I’m doing my best to channel Robert DeLeo.”

DeLeo also expressed his admiration for his past musical endeavors, including his work with Trip the Witch.
“Collaborating with Tom Bukovac and the other talented musicians involved in that project enabled me to approach my craft differently. I’ve always believed in allowing the song itself to guide my playing,” he explained.
“Many times, when I receive a track from Tom or when I’m composing my own music, I find myself on a sonic adventure, envisioning how I want to express it and record it.”
Key Insights from Dean DeLeo’s Interview on Loudwire Nights
- His appreciation for Black Sabbath’s debut album: “Not only was the music incredibly haunting, but growing up in a large English Tudor house in New Jersey, which was built in 1928, added to the spooky atmosphere. When I was upstairs, alone with the stereo playing that record, it felt genuinely eerie. The impact it had on me was profound. When I heard it for the first time, I was astounded by the sound coming from the speakers.”
- His gratitude for his career: “It’s immensely fulfilling, and I believe many artists who record music feel the same way. Leaving the studio after a day where my vision has come to life and hearing it through the speakers is extraordinary… Some days, I just thank God for the opportunity to do what I love.”
- Future projects on his agenda: “Pete and I have been busy writing over the past year, and we’ve already completed about 70 percent of our second album. I’ve also started working on our first Trip the Witch song recently, which I’m really excited about.”
