Original Series Characters Return in Paramount+ Show

Two former Star Trek characters are getting ready to return to the iconic world of the sci-fi franchise for the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Which Star Trek characters are returning for Strange New Worlds?

According to a new report from THR, Thomas Jane is set to play the role of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the upcoming series. Newcomer Kai Murakami will also star in the show, playing the role of Hikaru Sulu. According to THR’s report, the duo will both appear in the final episode of the fifth season of the show, which recently wrapped production and is set to be the show’s last.

McCoy, known as “Bones” in the history of Star Trek, was made famous by actor DeForest Kelley, who played the character in the original show. An accomplished doctor aboard the USS Enterprise, McCoy was also played by Karl Urban in the rebooted Star Trek films. Hikaru Sulu was made famous by George Takei, who starred as the character in the original series. John Cho also played the role in the reboot films.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered in 2022, and comes from creators Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. The show is a spin-off of 2017’s Star Trek: Discovery, and follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the Enterprise, set during the decade before the original Star Trek series.

Currently, three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream on Paramount+. A fourth season is set to release in 2026, with the previously mentioned fifth season set to debut sometime after that and consist of six episodes.
