At the Black Sabbath Bridge on Broad Street in Birmingham, fans paid their respects by laying flowers in front of a portrait of Osbourne, which soon became obscured by the overwhelming display of love and admiration. The bridge, dedicated to the iconic band in 2019, holds a special place in the hearts of fans and serves as a tribute to the rich history of Black Sabbath.
Originally named to honor the band that originated nearby, the bridge spans the historic 250-year-old Birmingham Canal. Guitarist Tony Iommi expressed his gratitude for the bridge’s dedication, describing it as a wonderful way for fans to connect with the band’s legacy and history.
For those unable to visit in person, a webcam overlooking the scene is accessible through the Black Sabbath Bench website, allowing fans worldwide to share in the tribute.
Other locations throughout Birmingham have also become makeshift shrines for fans to honor Osbourne. The city’s Museum and Art Gallery is currently hosting a special exhibition titled Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero, which will run until September 28. In addition, a book of condolences has been made available for visitors to express their sentiments. As stated by the museum, “We understand that many fans wish to pay tribute to him,” prompting them to extend opening hours to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays to accommodate as many visitors as possible.
In the United States, mourners gathered at 6780 Hollywood Blvd, the site of Osbourne’s Walk of Fame star, which was unveiled in 2002. Reflecting on the honor during the ceremony, Osbourne remarked, “To say that this is an honor is not enough. This is just so overwhelming, with all of you turning out so early in the morning to see my old butt.”
Musicians Share Heartfelt Tributes to Ozzy Osbourne
Rock icon Alice Cooper shared a moving video from his concert in Wales on the night of Osbourne’s passing, expressing the emotional weight of losing such a legendary figure. “We all know that time is going to take us rockers,” he stated, “but when the giants fall, it’s really hard to accept. Even though everybody saw it coming with Ozzy, it just took our breath away when it happened.”
Cooper went on to highlight Osbourne’s unique ability to infuse humor into the rock industry, concluding with, “We’re gonna miss you, man.” Metallica, who previously posted a heartfelt photo with Osbourne accompanied by a broken heart emoji, expressed their sentiments by stating, “It’s impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant. … Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and most of all, friend are just a few of the titles that come to mind.”
In their tribute, Metallica shared how Osbourne and Sharon profoundly impacted their lives and careers, teaching them how to navigate the complexities of the music business while being warm and supportive. “He left an incredible legacy and will be sorely missed,” they added, emphasizing the lasting impact Osbourne had on those who knew him.
Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue shared a personal story that showcased Osbourne’s generosity: “My daughter Frankie set up a stand to sell duct tape wallets … in an area both Ozzy and I used to live in, called Hidden Hills, California. I was standing there with my daughter when suddenly I heard Ozzy yelling my name. … he came running over to our little stand and asked what was going on. I told him, and he laughed, saying, ‘Well then, I’ll take them all.’”
Sixx’s memory encapsulates Osbourne’s kind-hearted nature and the joy he brought to those around him. “That was Ozzy. I will forever be grateful he gave our little ratty band from Hollywood our first big break. … Thank you for the music, your kindness, and your wicked sense of humor. Journey well, our friend.”
In a heartfelt message, the All on the Board team at a London Underground station, known for sharing inspirational messages during significant events, chose to honor Osbourne with a special notice. Describing him as “the world’s favorite rock ’n’ roll rebel,” the message read, “Mr. Crowley isn’t paranoid today as he’s crying tears for you; life and music changes, but our love for you will remain. Mama knows you’re going home to paradise where a dreamer can dream and there is no rain. You didn’t just ride the crazy train – you also drove it, too.”
A roadie for Wolfgang Van Halen’s band, Mammoth, reported on their decision to honor Osbourne during their show in Hartford, Connecticut, on the same day. “Just before soundcheck, the news that Ozzy had died started to filter through,” he wrote, detailing how the band learned to play “Mama, I’m Coming Home” in the dressing room. They practiced it twice before the show, delivering a raw and emotional performance that served as a fitting tribute to a rock legend.
The band Ghost also dedicated their performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City to Osbourne. Frontman Tobias Forge, in character as Papa V Perpetua, addressed the audience, stating, “For being the prince of darkness, he sure gave us a lot of light … we’re going to tap into that tonight and carry it forward through a time of darkness.”
