Paramount+ Canceled Its Best Crime Thriller of 2025 — Here’s Why

Breaking news just dropped about Paramount+ renewing Mayor of Kingstown for a fifth and final season, offering longtime fans of the Taylor Sheridan crime drama series a bittersweet sigh of relief. That said, it seems like Paramount could be making a big mistake by canceling the series after only five seasons and sending it off with a reduced 8-part final run, compared to its traditional 10 episodes.

While a fifth and final season of Mayor of Kingstown is more than welcome to its devoted fanbase, announcing the end of the series just days after the conclusion of its 100% Rotten Tomatoes fourth season isn’t necessarily riding off the hot momentum that season 4 created, which unexpectedly revitalized the series thanks to the creative oversight of showrunner Dave Erickson.

The End of Mayor Of Kingstown After 5 Seasons Is Disappointing

Those who experienced new weekly episode drops of Mayor of Kingstown season 4 understand just how surprisingly outstanding the series became last year, so much so that it nearly redefined the series altogether. After cutting off several loose ends in the season 3 finale, season 4 returned with one of its most thrilling premises yet, supported by new and/or enlarged roles from the likes of Emmy winner Edie Falco and Richard Brake, who played the show’s best villain yet, Merle Callahan.

Paramount had an interesting release strategy for three of Sheridan’s most successful shows last Fall, at one point releasing new episodes of Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman on the same day. Of this cluster, Mayor of Kingstown somehow always ranked the lowest on Paramount+’s global and worldwide streaming charts, even though the series was rated higher than either of the more-watched Sheridan projects.

Plain and simple, Mayor of Kingstown was Paramount+’s most critically acclaimed and fan-approved series during the second half of 2025. Its penultimate season 4 episode tied the 1923 series finale with the highest IMDb score (9.3) out of any Taylor Sheridan TV episode of all time, only to stick the landing with a satisfying season 4 finale a week later. Meanwhile, Landman just received its lowest IMDb episode score ever last week, and Tulsa King’s season 3’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes hit an all-time low of 56%.

A five-season run for Mayor of Kingstown would make more sense if season 4 hadn’t just elevated the series to a truly epic crime thriller status. The character development, the gripping story, the chilling cinematography, and the tension between Jeremy Renner’s Mike and the various forces against him all peaked in the latter half of season 4. This is far from a series on its last legs – it’s better than ever.

Mayor of Kingstown will get the chance to end on its own terms next season, but there should really be some discussion about how to expand this series further while Sheridan is still working under the Paramount umbrella until 2029. It’s known that Mike was a former inmate at the main fictional prison in the series, Anchor Bay, so perhaps a prequel series chronicling those days would suffice.

It’s hard to comprehend why Paramount would send Sheridan’s most critically acclaimed and fan-favorite series out to pasture when it’s red hot right now, coming off an all-time high. At the same time, new seasons of Tulsa King and Landman are already ordered despite their drop in audience approval. Ultimately, the bottom line comes down to viewership, and Mayor of Kingstown deserves much more of it.
