The visionary producer of the Star Trek franchise, Alex Kurtzman, shared that they began to seriously contemplate Giamatti’s involvement after the actor expressed his dream of portraying a Klingon while on the promotional tour for The Holdovers. “We exchanged glances and thought, ‘Is he joking?! Let’s reach out to his agent and find out,’” Kurtzman recounted. “Within an incredibly short time frame, less than an hour, [his agent] his agent responded, indicating that he was eager to discuss the opportunity further.”

When offered the opportunity to choose from five distinct roles, Giamatti opted for the main villain, showcasing his interest in a complex character. Although Kurtzman refrained from divulging intricate details about Giamatti’s character, he did mention that the villain “embodies a wave that has significantly and disturbingly impacted the world. I say this without taking a political stance. It’s essential to invite everyone into the discussion. One of my favorite aspects of Star Trek is its ability to connect with diverse audiences. People from all political backgrounds appreciate it for various reasons, and we aimed to stay true to that essence.

Set in the 32nd-century timeline of Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy will chronicle the journey of a new cohort of Starfleet cadets as they mature in one of the most revered locations in the galaxy. “These cadets carry immense responsibilities, tasked with reestablishing and revitalizing the core principles of what we all cherish about Star Trek,” Kurtzman elaborated. “They symbolize hope and embark on a quest for optimism, which feels like a highly relevant message in today’s world.

Noga Landau, who co-runs the series with Kurtzman, added, “This series is all about wish fulfillment. Each episode explores a new facet of growing up. One week it could revolve around a prank, another week might see a war erupt, yet another could delve into the beginnings of a romance, or we might introduce an entirely new alien species while navigating the unknown [another week]. By the end of each episode, we want our audience to feel, ‘I want to attend Starfleet Academy.’ Even amidst the most profound character struggles and drama, we aim to evoke a sense of eagerness and excitement about being part of this universe.

The ensemble cast features talented actors such as Kerrice Brooks (My Old Ass), Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything), Karim Diané (One Of Us Is Lying), Zoë Steiner (Significant Others), and Sandro Rosta (Snitches Get Stitches). Additionally, acclaimed actress Holly Hunter (The Incredibles) will portray the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy. Fans can also look forward to appearances from familiar faces such as Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman, who will reprise their roles as Discovery characters Jett Reno, Admiral Vance, and Sylvia Tilly, respectively. Furthermore, Robert Picardo will return as the Doctor, marking his first live-action portrayal of this iconic role since Star Trek: Voyager.
