Penguin Season 2: Prospects After 24 Emmy Nominations

The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were unveiled this morning, showcasing the incredible success of The Penguin, which garnered an impressive total of 24 nominations. Although the series has been categorized as a limited/anthology series, there has been ongoing speculation regarding a potential second season. Given the show’s numerous accolades, it seems highly likely that HBO Max would be eager to dive back into the intriguing and gritty world of Gotham City.

In an interview with Variety, HBO’s Casey Bloys was posed a question about the prospects of a second season for The Penguin.

The primary focus for Matt [Reeves] is currently on progressing with the movie project. I believe significant advancements are being made there,” Bloys stated. “I can confirm that he and [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] have been brainstorming various concepts. So could another chapter be on the horizon? It’s definitely a possibility. However, at this moment, Matt’s main priority is the movie. I’m aware that Lauren is exploring several ideas that could potentially complement the film. It’s feasible, but the details remain uncertain at this stage.

Bloys emphasized the importance of Colin Farrell‘s participation in the series. “Indeed, he is pivotal to portraying that complex and dark character, enduring lengthy hours in the makeup chair each day,” he elaborated. “Thus, his commitment to the project is crucial.

In a separate interview, Farrell dismissed the notion of a second season being in the works. “There’s literally nothing currently happening. If there were, and I was instructed to mislead you, I would probably have to do so. But honestly, no,” he remarked. “Given the show’s success, there have certainly been discussions about, ‘Could we create a second season? What would that entail?’ However, there is absolutely nothing in the pipeline.” The actor also mentioned the excitement surrounding a sequel to The Batman. “There’s Batman 2, for which I haven’t yet seen the script,” he shared. “There’s also Batman 3. I’m uncertain about my involvement or the details, but I’m looking forward to reading the script for Batman 2 soon.

Would you be excited for another season of The Penguin, or do you believe the series should conclude as a standalone?
