Netflix‘s upcoming adaptation of Philip K. Dick has the potential to join the ranks of Silo and Fallout as the next dystopian epic.
Silo and Fallout are among the most compelling and commercially successful dystopian thrillers currently available on streaming platforms. Even after two seasons, both post-apocalyptic TV shows have maintained their momentum and are poised to further expand their bleak, immersive worlds. As Silo and Fallout continue their sci-fi reign, Netflix also promises to deliver an enthralling dystopian drama.
Similar to Silo, the upcoming Netflix sci-fi show is a book adaptation and appears to hold significant potential.
Netflix’s New Philip K. Dick Adaptation Can Be As Good As Silo & Fallout
Netflix is adapting Philip K. Dick’s cult novel, The World Jones Made. The show is officially titled The Future Is Ours. While The World Jones Made may not be among Philip K. Dick’s best-known novels from a commercial standpoint, it presents an intriguing concept with compelling sci-fi ideas in its post-apocalyptic setting that could position it as a worthy rival to Silo and Fallout.
While the primary narrative drivers of Silo revolve around the mysteries of its central setting’s past, Fallout emphasizes the chaos of the present world following nuclear devastation. As revealed in the original Philip K. Dick novel, The Future is Ours will focus more on foresight regarding what lies ahead and how determinism can cause more harm than good.
Given that Philip K. Dick’s works often eschew conventional storytelling formats and focus more on philosophical paradoxes than straightforward plot progression, it seems unlikely that Netflix’s adaptation of The World Jones Made will be a direct book-to-screen translation. Reports indicate that the show will entirely remove one of the key plots from the book, which introduces an alien species.
While only time will reveal how these changes will play out, Netflix’s The Future is Ours is being produced by the team behind Netflix’s The Eternaut and One Hundred Years of Solitude. Given the success of both shows, this upcoming series already appears promising.
The adaptation of Philip K. Dick on Netflix also benefits from its source material being a non-traditional exploration of a post-apocalyptic world, similar to what is seen in Silo and Fallout, thus bringing something fresh to the genre.
What Is Netflix’s The Future Is Ours About?
Netflix’s The Future is Ours is set in the year 2047, where, following a global ecological collapse, a coalition of South American countries known as FedSur resorts to extreme measures to address hunger. This is when a young preacher named Jonás Flores gains fame online due to his ability to foresee the future.
He is soon arrested, but his precognitive abilities help him amass a significant following, especially after he predicts FedSur’s downfall and humanity’s eventual victory over climate change. However, this triggers a series of events that blur the line between prophecy and manipulation, demonstrating that predicting the future is not as straightforward as it appears.
While it may be premature to speculate on how Netflix’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick will unfold, its plot alone suggests it could be as intriguing as both Silo and Fallout.
