PlayStation 5 has officially reached the end of an era today, and it’s terrible news for gamers who have been holding off on investing in a brand-new console. While PS5 prices have remained relatively steady since the console’s launch back in 2020, gamers are in for a harsh new reality.
Just weeks after an official announcement from Sony, PlayStation 5 consoles across the board will be facing a dramatic price increase effective today (via PlayStation Direct). This involves the largest single price increase to date for PS5 Disc, Digital, and Pro consoles, and it’s bound to have a dramatic impact on PlayStation gamers writ large.
The PS5 Is Way Less Affordable Now
It’s an extremely expensive time to be a PlayStation 5 gamer now that the console has officially faced a massive price increase for all three versions. Starting today, players can expect the following prices on each console type:
|
PS5 |
PS5 Digital |
PS5 Pro |
|
|---|---|---|---|
|
U.S. |
$649.99 |
$599.99 |
$899.99 |
|
UK |
£569.99 |
£519.99 |
£789.99 |
|
Europe |
€649.99 |
€599.99 |
€899.99 |
|
Japan |
¥97,980 |
¥89,980 |
¥137,980 |
For comparison, previous U.S. prices for the PS5 Disc Edition were $100 less at just $549.99, and each version has seen a roughly $100 jump on the official PlayStation Direct store today as well.
Historically, there surprisingly has not been a major price increase at this level since the PlayStation 5 console’s launch back in 2020, with the price floating steady at $499.99 up until 2025, when it was raised slightly to $549.99. That means that today’s price increase will equate to a $150 price hike, or a 30% increase on PlayStation 5 consoles in just a year’s time (i.e., 2025 to 2026).
It’s A Bad Time To Buy Consoles
2026 might arguably be the absolute worst time to buy a new PlayStation 5 console, which will come as bad news for gamers who were planning on an upgrade sometime soon. The price increases are a bit unprecedented given the trajectory of console prices in the past, with costs tending to decrease over time due to production and manufacturing becoming more streamlined and efficient.
Sony cites “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the core reason for these price increases, pointing to chip shortages and absurd tariff and trade policies in the U.S. as major contributing factors.
It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances that ultimately is going to come at a great cost to gamers, and many players who anticipated prices on PlayStation 5 consoles to decrease as time went on are going to end up regretting their decision to wait. While it’s unclear if prices will end up getting raised again in the future, it’s highly unlikely they’ll see a decrease back to where they used to be.
