Plus size fashion has significant room for improvement—like, a lot more than what we currently see. While there have been some exciting advancements in recent years, we must remain vigilant and not settle for mediocrity. The initial momentum that once felt revolutionary is starting to fade, and honestly, this decline is apparent. Several brands that previously championed size inclusivity are becoming increasingly silent—reducing their size ranges, exiting the market entirely, or simply neglecting the needs of the plus size consumer. And let’s not even begin to discuss the constant promises of “we’ll restock soon” that never seem to materialize.
As a publication dedicated to fashion, we cannot ignore how frustrating this situation is. What initially appeared to be the dawn of a true revolution is now resembling a trend that has lost its appeal. Inclusivity should not be an occasional offering; it must become the standard in the industry. So while we celebrate the victories, we are also critically observing the setbacks. Plus size fashion deserves more than mere scraps; we demand the entire buffet of options!
This widening disparity between what plus size consumers desire and what the fashion industry actually provides has motivated me to investigate further. Frustrated with limited selections, inconsistent sizing, and brands treating our needs as an afterthought, we gathered insights from numerous conversations. From these discussions, we compiled a list of the ten most pressing complaints from plus size fashion consumers. It’s time for the industry to genuinely listen—and to advocate for meaningful and lasting change.
So, are you ready to join the conversation?
1. Where Are the Pockets in Plus Size Fashion?

This winter, I was shocked when I bought an outerwear jacket that had no pockets! I don’t know about you, but I need pockets in my life, particularly in my jackets and coats! While this absence might be excusable if there were hidden pockets in the inner lining, there weren’t any at all. Over the past decade, we’ve witnessed a movement toward incorporating more pockets into various clothing items.
I’ve even spotted pockets in wedding dresses! How fantastic is that? As someone who prefers using pockets over carrying a bag, I firmly believe that more garments need to include pockets!
Shallow or Fake Pockets? We Demand Functionality!

Another significant dissatisfaction among fashion enthusiasts revolves around the issue of non-functional pockets. Often, garments feature a design that simulates a pocket but fails to provide practical utility because there’s no pocket bag or a sealed opening without an underlying pouch. In some cases, pockets may be sewn shut during manufacturing to maintain the garment’s shape, even though the actual pocket bag remains intact and the stitching can be easily removed.
However, creating a visual representation of a pocket without delivering its intended function raises concerns regarding design priorities. This trend seems to prioritize aesthetic appeal over practical usability, leaving many consumers frustrated.
And here’s a crucial point- not all women carry bags or purses!
Functional pockets are essential! If a man’s pair of jeans can accommodate a tablet, then women’s jeans should certainly be designed to hold our cell phones comfortably. Fashion and function can coexist harmoniously!
Why Are We Stuck with Itchy Tags?
Hanes stands out as a brand that has embraced tagless technology for a considerable portion of its undergarment line, including t-shirts, boxers, briefs, and underwear. This shift towards tagless design offers various advantages. Operationally, it can streamline manufacturing processes and potentially lower costs associated with producing, attaching, and inspecting traditional labels.
Beyond the production efficiencies, the tagless approach provides tangible benefits for consumers and aligns with broader environmental considerations. Eliminating sewn-in tags addresses a prevalent source of discomfort, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin who often experience irritation or itching. The need to remove these labels frequently results in damage to the garment. By directly screen-printing essential information onto the fabric, the problem of scratchy tags is resolved, and the environmental impact is lessened by reducing the demand for polyester labels and the energy required for their production and attachment.
Where Are the Petite, Tall, and Plus Size Sections?

Have you recently visited a department store? Do you often find yourself wandering in circles, desperately searching for the plus size section? It seems that both plus size and petite options have nearly vanished from many retail spaces. Numerous companies claim to be embracing a wider range of size offerings, yet this promise rarely translates onto the store floor, leaving consumers feeling frustrated and disappointed.
When you finally encounter a garment available in your size, it often evokes a mix of sadness and lack of style. Just because we’re plus size doesn’t mean we don’t want stylish, well-designed clothing!
Consistency in Sizing is Essential!
It perplexes us that sizes can vary so dramatically depending on the brand. In one store, you might fit into a size L, while in another, you could be a 3XL. When it comes to pants, that’s an entirely different battle! Many women find it exasperating that they still struggle to find pants that fit their bodies well. It’s disheartening to know that you’re a specific size in one shop but a completely different size in another.
The inconsistency in sizing often leaves consumers feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. Common issues with bottoms include inseams that are either too long or too short, waistbands that gap, and fits that work for the thighs but not the waist—or vice versa. It appears that the fashion industry has numerous sizing issues that require urgent attention.
While tailors exist for a reason, and no company can cater to everyone’s needs, it’s evident that a significant consumer demand remains unmet. Furthermore, the larger the size, the more pronounced the discrepancies in fit tend to be.
It’s Not Just About the Price Tag
Most women have indicated that their concerns extend beyond mere pricing. In my experience, you often get what you pay for. A $5 t-shirt typically disintegrates after just two washes, while a $250 jacket tends to endure beyond one season. Many individuals are willing to invest more if they know they are purchasing quality goods. This is not always easy in today’s budget-conscious climate, but it remains feasible.
Consumers are becoming increasingly mindful of where their hard-earned money goes, prompting them to be more deliberate about their purchases. Personally, I would much prefer to pay a bit more to invest in clothing, knowing that it won’t fall apart or shrink a full size after a single wash! Wouldn’t you?
Emphasizing Local Purchases!
Shifting consumer buying habits are evident; more individuals are seeking out unique, one-of-a-kind items that they cannot find anywhere else. Consequently, a growing number of local and small businesses are emerging and flourishing in response to this consumer demand. Buying local comes with numerous benefits, including supporting your community and neighbors.
Furthermore, manufacturing is increasingly returning to the United States. This trend is beneficial not only for smaller independent brands but also for bolstering the local economy. Supporting smaller businesses allows for more ethical and sustainable production practices, while also providing consumers with niche, unique items.
Fashion That Caters to All Ages!
It seems that today’s newest and most exciting fashion trends primarily cater to individuals aged 25 and younger.
There is a significant opportunity for the modern female consumer who possesses both disposable income and sophisticated taste. This issue appears to be even more pronounced within the plus size community. Independent fashion brands have a golden opportunity to cater to the middle-aged consumer.
Need for Larger Accessories!
The limited selection of bracelets designed for larger wrists poses a challenge for many consumers. Much like the demand for size inclusivity in apparel, the accessories market should also adequately cater to a broader range of sizes. Attempting to fit standard-sized bangle bracelets often leads to frustration for individuals with larger wrists.
Additionally, the design and durability of certain types of jewelry, such as rings, can become a point of concern. While fashionable rings are desirable, using stretchy backings may compromise comfort and longevity. These designs often break easily and can pinch, causing discomfort.
Prioritizing Sustainability in Fashion
The environmental impact of the fashion industry is a significant concern. The industry has been identified as a contributor to various environmental issues, from fabric waste to environmentally damaging leather tanning processes. Although sustainability is becoming an increasing priority within fashion, it is evident that more brands need to commit to improving these harmful practices.
While smaller brands are making strides in this area, until larger brands prioritize sustainability and consumers demand it, meaningful change will continue to be slow. Fortunately, consumer awareness is rising, with many willing to invest more in sustainable products.
