A few years ago, I created a post discussing how we are often confined by our own plus size stigmas… and it feels like it was just yesterday! Time flies when you’re on a journey of self-acceptance and growth.
What do we mean by plus size stigmas? These are the self-imposed thoughts and beliefs that we sometimes cling to, which can confuse, oppress, or hinder our personal growth and our ability to embrace our fabulousness. It’s a mental block that can limit us.
As I reflect, I ponder whether we, as a community and an industry, have made meaningful progress over these past four years. Have we evolved in our understanding and acceptance of plus size fashion?
As we enter a new year, I find myself excited to introduce new elements and features to the blog. I often wonder how my ideas will resonate with you all. Sometimes, I question whether my mindset is too radical, too ambitious, or perhaps even too idealistic.
But then, I remind myself, ‘what the hell’, and I share my insights anyway. I firmly believe that even a few voices can create significant positive change, and I have witnessed this transformation over the years. Yet, I also recognize that we still have a journey ahead of us… LOL
Have the Stigmas Evolved? Let’s Revisit and Explore!
Finding Designers Who Celebrate My Body Size

In recent years, the landscape of plus size fashion has dramatically shifted. There are now numerous designers dedicated to catering to our needs, far more than there were five or even ten years ago. Retailers and boutiques are stepping up and providing options that celebrate our bodies, meaning we now have to do a little research to find out who is offering what we truly desire and require.
While it’s true that we may not have an abundance of plus size options in physical malls, we are blessed with a significant increase in online and boutique choices. Although we certainly need more options, it’s encouraging to see the progress! Have you checked out the Plus Size Boutique directory? Or my curated list of favorite plus size designers and retailers?
With more online boutiques emerging and thriving, I am confident that with patience and constructive feedback, we will continue to witness healthy growth in this sector. I believe this change is already underway!

Understanding the Costs of Plus Size Fashion

Understanding the costs associated with plus size fashion can be quite complex. As the options have expanded, so have the reasons for varying price points in the industry. By grasping these nuances, we can better temper our expectations when shopping.
Factors such as quality, fabric, form, function, and exclusivity all influence the prices we see. It’s crucial to emphasize that investing in timeless pieces is always a wise choice. I have several classic items in my wardrobe that have lasted for years, offering versatility and longevity. These classics breathe life into my style.
Moreover, if you browse through fashion magazines, visit contemporary departments, or stroll through stores like Nordstrom or Bloomingdales, you’ll notice that many plus size items are beginning to resemble those from contemporary designers, complete with similar price tags.
While I am an advocate for finding great deals, and most of my purchases are made on sale, I also know when to be patient and what pieces are worth investing in, based on my personal style and shopping habits. This journey of understanding is invaluable and contributes to building confidence in shopping. Woot!
Navigating Size Discrepancies in Plus Size Fashion

The issue of size discrepancies is not unique to plus size fashion. While there are commonalities among various designers and retailers, women in both straight and plus size segments learn which designers fit them best and tend to work within those parameters, often involving tailoring.
This principle applies equally to plus size clothing. As the number of designers and retailers increases, understanding your measurements and which designers suit your body type becomes essential. Yes, it may require some effort, but once you identify brands that work for you, shopping becomes a more enjoyable and confident experience.
I frequently receive inquiries about wide calf boots, and when I ask women for their calf measurements, I am often met with blank stares or surprised reactions.

As I reflect on this post from four years ago, it’s intriguing to observe the progress we’ve made. However, with these advancements come new challenges and concerns. I believe that with patience, education, and a positive outlook, we will navigate through this journey successfully! The mere fact that you are reading this is progress in itself…
Having gained insights from over 12 years in retail and five years of blogging, I strive to share my experiences and hopefully assist at least one person on their journey toward feeling fabulous and confident in plus size fashion!
What are your thoughts on these reflections? Have you noticed growth in the community? Have you gained insights over the past few years that you share with your friends? I’m eager to hear from you!
