Predator Director Discusses Franchise’s Future After Career Shift

Director Dan Trachtenberg has delivered exceptional movies and TV episodes, particularly known for revitalizing the Predator franchise. He transformed the classic 1987 film led by Arnold Schwarzenegger into a survival-horror narrative rich in lore, appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers. Starting with the prequel Prey, which became an instant success for Hulu and received multiple nominations, he continued with Killers of Killers, followed by the theatrical release Badlands.

The success of Badlands led to the announcement of Prey 2, though uncertainty arose when Trachtenberg signed a first-look producing and directing deal with Paramount, as Predator is a property of 20th Century Studios/Disney. While fans have speculated about the franchise’s future, the director recently disclosed that he is quietly developing the next film. He stated to ScreenRant, “Well, Predator, I’m in this zone of dreaming up more, like I said, as I had been previously.” He also mentioned that he is concurrently working on several IPs for Paramount.

“And then Paramount is this incredible opportunity to make original things that have been in my heart and mind for a long time. I’m thrilled to have a place to make them theatrically. And they also have some very cool IP that I could now get to think about, like, ‘Oh, what might I do with that?’ So, it’s a simultaneous thing, but Paramount now is definitely really exciting, and I’ve been writing stuff to hopefully make there.”

What Can We Anticipate From the ‘Predator’ Franchise?

Although the director did not share specific ideas, he mentioned that he views his three films as “entry points of the franchise.” He added that “Okay, we now have this cool story; we now have these other characters that would be interesting to explore further, but is there anything else that we haven’t seen in the franchise, or anything else in sci-fi that would be exciting to do as another entry point?”

Trachtenberg has redirected the franchise by experimenting with various storytelling methods and media. Given his remarks, fans can expect deeper exploration of Yautjas. It will be intriguing to see where the director takes the franchise next. Trachtenberg is among several creators who have signed agreements with Paramount following its merger with Skydance, including the Duffer brothers, Jon M. Chu, and James Mangold.
