‘The Girlfriend’ (2025)

Adapted from Michelle Frances‘ 2017 novel, The Girlfriend is a psychological thriller miniseries directed by Andrea Harkin and Robin Wright, with the latter also starring in the show. The series follows Laura (Wright), a wealthy art gallery owner who grows suspicious of her son Daniel’s (Laurie Davidson) new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and sets out to discover the truth about her. The show also features Waleed Zuaiter, Tanya Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and more in supporting roles.

Released on Prime Video in September 2025, The Girlfriend earned a positive critical reception and audience attention with its twisty exploration of love and greed. Though its plot is a bit uneven, the show is elevated from simple pulp by Wright and Cooke’s stellar performances, with their antagonistic chemistry carrying the experience even when the story hits rough patches. Overall, it’s a soapy and entertaining thriller that brilliantly derives drama and tension from the psychologically complex relationship between a mother and her son’s chosen partner.

‘Z: The Beginning of Everything’ (2015–2017)

Created by Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin, Z: The Beginning of Everything is a semi-biographical period drama series about socialite and writer Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. Starring Christina Ricci as Zelda, the show is based on Therese Anne Fowler’s Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, and follows a fictionalized version of her life, primarily exploring her relationship with her husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald (David Hoflin). The series also stars David Strathairn, Christina Bennett Lind, Natalie Knepp, Kristine Nielsen, Jamie Anne Allman, Maya Kazan, Lucy Walters, and more in key roles.

The pilot episode of Z: The Beginning of Everything premiered in 2015 to a largely favorable reception, but the rest of its first season wasn’t released until over a year later in 2017. Despite initially being renewed for a second outing, the show was ultimately canceled by Amazon and has more or less faded from public memory since then. Though that means the show’s story is a lot shorter than it should have been, the series is a delightful and underrated period drama with excellent performances, a passionate story, and gorgeous visuals.

‘The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh’ (2024)

Created by Vijal Patel, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh is a comedy series that revolves around the titular family, who have recently immigrated from India to the United States. Presented primarily through flashbacks from an interrogation by INS agents, the show explores the hilarious roller coaster of events that have taken place in the two years the Pradeeps have been in America, leading up to a mysterious case of arson at their neighbors’ home. The series stars Sindhu Vee, Naveen Andrews, Sahana Srinivasan, Arjun Sriram, Ashwin Sakthivel, Nicholas Hamilton, Ethan Suplee, and Megan Hilty in lead roles.

Though it didn’t make much of an impression on wider audiences, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh was quite favorably received by critics after its release. The show was the last to be released on Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee, and sadly was not renewed for any further seasons, leaving its central mystery unresolved. Despite the disappointing ending, however, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh is a wild and entertaining show that explores culture clashes and the immigrant experience in hysterical ways.
