Prince Frederik, the youngest son of the esteemed Prince and Princess of Nassau, has tragically passed away after bravely battling a debilitating illness that has deeply affected his life.

His father, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, announced the heartbreaking news that his son succumbed to a rare genetic condition known as POLG Mitochondrial disease. This illness is particularly severe as it “deprives the body’s cells of energy, leading to progressive dysfunction and eventual failure of multiple organs,” as explained by the POLG Foundation. Prince Frederik was diagnosed with this challenging condition at the young age of 14, which significantly impacted his life.

In a poignant statement, his father shared, “On the evening of February 28th, during ‘Rare Disease Day’, our cherished son summoned us to his room for one final conversation. Frederik demonstrated incredible strength and courage, offering heartfelt goodbyes to each of us in turn. He shared moments filled with kindness, wisdom, and insightful advice, embodying his distinct and humorous personality as he concluded with a cherished family joke that will remain with us forever.”

Prince Frederik passed away surrounded by his loving family. His father expressed, “Even in his final moments, Frederik’s humor and immense compassion shone through, leaving us with a final laugh that uplifted our spirits and reminded us of the love we shared.”

He is survived by his father, his mother Princess Julie of Nassau, his brother Alexander, his sister Charlotte, his three cousins Charly, Louis, and Donall, his brother-in-law Mansour, as well as his Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Mark. They will all miss him dearly and cherish the memories they shared.
