What Is the Plot of the New Superman Movie?

The landscape of the DC Universe has undergone significant changes over the past year. James Gunn, renowned for directing the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, has taken on the role of co-CEO of DC Studios, working alongside Peter Safran. In January 2023, James outlined his ambitious vision for the future of the DC Universe, directly addressing the new Superman project.

During this announcement, James conveyed that he was in the process of crafting the screenplay. He described Superman as the “true beginning of the DCU,” setting the stage for an expansive narrative.

Peter provided additional insights into Superman’s journey in the upcoming film during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not an origin story,” Peter emphasized. “The focus is on Superman’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He embodies truth, justice, and the American way, representing kindness in a world that often devalues those traits.”

James expressed his excitement about exploring Superman’s narrative, relating it to his own experiences. “I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am,” James shared with THR. “He’s someone who feels like an outsider yet is the ultimate insider because he’s Superman. That resonates with me on a personal level.”

Through a series of tweets, James confirmed he would be directing Superman. “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy, which is set to be released on July 11, 2025. When my brother Matt saw the release date, he started to cry. I asked him why, and he said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized,” James disclosed. He also revealed that he had initially turned down the opportunity to direct Superman years ago but felt compelled to take on the project this time.

“Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude,” he tweeted. “However, I love this script and am incredibly excited as we begin this journey. #UpUpandAway.”
