This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 8.Joey Quinn had a disappointing story in Dexter season 8, and Dexter: Resurrection just made it even worse 12 years after the fact. Joey Quinn is one of several original Dexter characters who are in Resurrection. He, alongside Vince Masuka, came to bid Angel Batista farewell as he retired from his job and went to New York to start hunting Dexter and Harrison.
Quinn hasn’t had a huge role to play since then, but Dexter: Resurrection episode 8 finally gave us an update on him. Unfortunately, it also made his treatment in Dexter season 8 even worse. By the end of the original Dexter, Quinn had been passed up for a promotion and watched Deb get murdered without rekindling their romance. Now, Resurrection had another subtle blow for Quinn.
Joey Quinn Wasn’t Made Batista’s Replacement As Miami Metro’s Captain
In Dexter: Resurrection episode 8, Claudette Wallace called Miami Metro to learn more about Angel and why he was investigating the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Quinn answered, and he revealed that he had been promoted to lieutenant in the years since Dexter. That also, however, implicitly confirmed that Quinn hasn’t become Miami Metro Homicide’s captain after Batista retired.
In a single line, Dexter: Resurrection disrespected Quinn the same way Dexter season 8 did. Longtime fans will remember that Quinn applied to be Batista’s sergeant, only to be passed up for the role after taking the test. Now, 12 years later, Quinn was passed up yet again for the captain position. Lieutenant is still a step up from detective, but it’s not the career trajectory Quinn deserves.
Quinn’s job as a lieutenant also doesn’t make a lot of sense. With Batista gone, Quinn is the most senior detective at Miami Metro Homicide. It’s been at least 15 years since he transferred to homicide, and he spent an unknown amount of time in narcotics before that. Batista also should have had some say in naming his replacement, and he should have nominated his longtime friend.
Who Is Miami Metro’s New Captain After Batista?
The fact that Joey Quinn isn’t the captain of Miami Metro Homicide necessarily begs the question: who is? As previously mentioned, Quinn was by far the most qualified person to take Batista’s spot. He had nearly two decades of experience as a detective, first with Narcotics and then with Homicide. He was also friends with Batista, which should have made him a shoo-in to get a recommendation for the position.
Luckily, we have an almost guaranteed answer: Detective Angie Miller. Miller was introduced in Dexter season 7, and she was eventually promoted to Sergeant in season 8. She actually beat Quinn for the position and earned Batista’s personal endorsement over his longtime friend. It would be natural for Miller to become Captain instead of Quinn; she had been in a leadership role longer and Batista had a higher opinion of her talents.

There’s also the possibility that Miami Metro hasn’t named a new captain yet. Batista retired at the start of Resurrection, and only a few weeks had passed since he left Miami Metro. It’s entirely possible that Miami Metro is still interviewing candidates, and that Quinn could become captain in season 2 ofDexter: Resurrection.. He would still have to beat Angie Miller, though.
