Ridley Scott’s next movie is getting closer by the day, but one classic sci-fi masterpiece you may have forgotten he directed has become a global streaming sensation. 10 years ago, Scott teamed up with Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain for The Martian, the space survival film based on Andy Weir’s acclaimed novel of the same name. The film tells the story of Mark Watney (Damon), an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars after a mission goes wrong. The Martian recently began streaming on HBO Max globally, where the film has surged into the top 10 in more than 15 countries around the world.
In America, The Martian is streaming on Netflix, and the streamer has not yet announced when it will leave the platform — it’s safe for now. The film was beloved by critics and audiences, earning equally fresh scores of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed a whopping $630 million at the global box office against a $108 million budget. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Lead Actor (Matt Damon), Best Screenplay, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Production Design. It took home none of these awards.
Drew Goddard wrote the script for The Martian from Weir’s novel. Goddard is also writing the script for Weir’s next adaptation, Project Hail Mary, which arrives in theaters everywhere on March 20, 2026. For Ridley Scott, The Martian came only one year after he teamed up with Christian Bale for Exodus: Gods and Kings, the biblical epic that also stars Joel Edgerton. He followed The Martian with Alien: Covenant, his final Alien movie.
What Do We Know About Ridley Scott’s Next Movie?
Ridley Scott’s next movie, titled The Dog Stars, will be released exclusively in theaters on March 27, 2026. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller is set in a world where a deadly virus wipes out most of humanity, leaving several groups of scavengers to fend for themselves in a new world. Scott has recruited Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong to star in the film, which is based on the novel by Peter Heller. Mark L. Smith wrote the script with Christopher Wilkinson. Scott is also working on a mystery Western that may be his next project after The Dog Stars.
